λ Carel Weight (British 1908-1997) Self Portrait with Nancy CarlineOil on canvas Signed (lower left)122 x 84cm (48 x 33 in.)Provenance:Sale, Bonhams, 21 September 2004, lot 230 Carel Weight was interviewed in 1991 for National Life Story Collection: Artists' Lives. Weight discusses the imaginative qualities of the present lot. He placed the table and plant in the corner of the composition to enhance the space. He used bricks to create a contrast to the flatness of the walls emphasising the effect of patterns. This effect can also be seen through the juxtaposition between the striped sofa and textured carpet. Strong angles created by fragments of objects to interject the space were commonly used by Weight in his compositions. In the present lot the rigid trunk of the tree and vertical railings fill the upper left quadrant developing pattern and interest. On showing the picture to Nancy Carline, she commented that she liked the picture very much.
