Lot 1309

2200-2100 BC. A carved serpentine seal with three robed figures; accompanied by a typed and signed scholarly note issued by W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham which states: Cylinder Seal of Black Stone, 30.5 x 16mm. On the right a deity sits on a stool, raising one hand. Facing the deity is a second deity, also raising one hand, but gripping the wrist of a worshipper behind him with the other hand. All three figures are in long robes. Between the two deities is a table with three breads on it. This is a post-Akkad seal, c. 2200-2100 B.C., from Mesopotamia. It is in a very good state of preservation, but crudely cut in the usual style of the period. 15 grams, 31cm (1 1/4"). Private collection, London, UK; formed 1970s-1980s. Fine condition.

Lot 1397

2nd millennium BC. A ceramic plaque with image of an table in high relief comprising two short legs, vertical posts with five figures between supporting a plaque with hatched panel and curled bands, surmounted by a bearded figure with hands on the chest flanked by plants; mounted on a custom-made stand. The plaque depicts a ritual banqueting scene held in honour of a deity which is seen at the top. The name of the deity is unknown but the presence of plants to either side would suggests that he is a vegetation god, possibly Tammuz. Below is a table piled with ritual offerings and with five devotees partaking of the meal. Ritual feasts were common in the ancient Near East, such as the New Year, and at times associated with the festivals of a certain deity. 286 grams, 15cm including stand (6"). From an important North London collection formed before 1980. Fine condition.

17th century AD. A silver flat-section hoop with text to the inner face in seriffed capitals '- NOT VALV - BVT - VERTV -' (not value but virtue), maker's mark a monogram 'IC' for James Cockburne of Edinburgh. Maker's mark cited in Jackson, Sir C.J. English Goldsmiths and Their Marks, London, 1921, p.499 table II. James Cockburne was one a of a small coterie of silversmiths - including James Penman, Edward Cleghorne, Robert Bruce, Robert Inglis, Alexander Forbes and a few others - who dominated the Edinburgh silver market in the later 17th century. 3.13 grams, 22mm overall, 19.44mm internal diameter (approximate size British S 1/2, USA 9 1/2, Europe 21, Japan 20) (1"). Property of a Suffolk lady; formerly in the Deago collection, by descent from the vendor's mother. Fine condition.
