Wright (Thomas & The Rev. H. Longueville Jones). Le Keux's Memorials of Cambridge: a series of Views of the Colleges, Halls, and Public Buildings, Engraved by J. Le Keux, 2 vols., 1841, additional engraved titles, numerous engraved plates and plans, some light spotting, a.e.g., contemp. morocco-backed cloth, some marks, together with Ingram (The Rev. James), Memorials of the Colleges and Halls in the University of Oxford, 2nd ed., 2 vols., Oxford, 1847, numerous engraved plates, frontis. detached to volume one, contemp. gilt dec. sheep, rubbed, 8vo (4) In 1745 Dr. John Egerton, a rector from Ross-on-Wye, was the first to build a boat especially to take guests on excursions down the Wye. By the 1770's boats equipped with a canopy, padded seats, and a table on which to write and draw were available for hire from inns at Ross and Monmouth for the journey downriver. The boat owner provided food and wine to be enjoyed on the trip, which took two days from Ross to Chepstow, with an overnight stop at Monmouth, where most of the tourists decanted to one of the numerous inns in Agincourt Square. In 1770 William Gilpin made the river journey from Ross to Chepstow to examine the scenery "by the rules of picturesque beauty", and the success of his book, "Observations on the River Wye and several parts of South Wales", first published in 1782, was a major factor in the growth of fashionable interest in the Wye Tour. By the end of the eighteenth century there were at least eight tourist boats operating on the river. Stops would be made at the well known sites for the tourists to explore or walk to viewpoints high above the river to enjoy the landscape and "picturesque scenery", as defined by Gilpin. The period 1770 to 1830 saw the heyday of the Tour, which became over-commercialised and less leisurely as the nineteenth century progressed. Travellers took certain essential items with them, including a Claude Glass, telescope, maps, journals, and sketch books, and many accounts of Tours, including those by Samuel Ireland, William Coxe, Charles Heath, Thomas Roscoe, Louisa Ann Twamley, and Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Hall, were published after Gilpin's..
