A Chinese 'Yang Zongbao and Mu Guiying' painted enamel rectangular trayQing dynasty, 18th century Finely painted with a central scene of a lady holding a spear on a fenced terrace outside a circular window, addressing a gentleman also holding a spear, the window showing a further elegant lady sitting at a table observing the two, all framed by a puce-enamelled scrolling band, the curved cavetto with shaped lotus panels set on a ground of black and gilt scrolling leaves on pale turquoise, the reverse also with four shaped medallions of puce-enamelled lotuses on a green and white ice-crackle ground, and blue-enamelled flowers to the base, 18.8cm x 29.3cm.清十八世紀 銅胎畫琺瑯‘楊宗保與穆桂英’圖紋長方盤The present lot, depicting an elegant lady and a gentleman respectively holding a halberd and a spear within an elegant terraced garden, is likely representing the famous couple from the legends of the 'Generals of the Yang family'.Brought up in the practice of Martial arts by her bandit father Mu Yu, who ruled the Muke Fortress, Mu Guiying met Yang Zongbao, the youngest scion of the famous Yang clan, when he came to the fortress demanding the Dragon-Taming Wood on order of his father, Marshall Yan Yanzhao. Having refused to relinquish the treasure, Mu fought Yang in a duel, which she won, capturing the young man, who refused to surrender and demanded death,The heroine however developed an attraction for the young warrior, to whom she made a marriage proposal, which he eventually accepted. Her future father in law, Yan Yanzhao, was none too impressed by the engagement, and ordered the execution of his youngest son. In order to save her fianceé, Mu Guiying came out of the fortress to fight Yan Yanzhao, whom she also defeated and captured, thus winning the respect of her future father-in-law, who finally gave his blessing to the union.Condition Report: Some expected areas of old cracking and sympathetic overpainting to the enamels as consistent with the medium, especially around the cavetto and to the reverse.
