AN ENGLISH WALNUT DOUBLE GATE LEG TABLE DESIGNED AND MADE BY SIDNEY BARNSLEY the top with gouged ends and dovetailed^ the trestles pierced with a hand hole and united by a chamfered double stretcher^ 72cm h; 76 x 82.5cm^ with printed depository label of E E Lapworth & Sons Aylestone Road Leicester^ inscribed MESSRS HARRISON MURRAY^ c1900 Provenance: Mentor Gimson (1851-1925) thence by descent to the present vendor. Made at the Pinbury Workshop or shortly after Gimson and the Barnsleys had set up the Daneway Workshop at Sapperton in 1902. Sidney Barnsley showed an oak version of the present table at the Arts & Crafts Exhibition in 1896. The originality of the design received a favourable review in The Cabinet Maker and Art Furnisher. |... the designer was eminently proud of its primitive character. The prominent and well-cut dovetails^ the hand-hole for lifting^ and the compact appearance when closed^ are all good points. Of course^ it is our old friend the ~Sutherland Table~ over again^ but revived in light oak with a touch of Gothic in its toes and construction. All these elements are salutary^ and the table deserves a position of honour| (vol XVII^ Nov 1896^ p115). The table was purchased from the exhibition in London by C H St John Hornby and was Barnsley~s first professional sale (Greensted^ op cit fig 51 and p86). ++The feet stained^ presumably from having been long stood on a stone flagged floor washed down by a mop. One was supplied to a Mr D Cole and another drawing is dated August 1909 (cat. 1941.222.399/402). One of these is probably that illustrated in Ernest Gimson His Life & Work^ Stratford upon Avon 1924^ plt 32 (bottom). It also appears to be the table in a contemporary photograph (Edward Barnsley Educational Trust) of Gimson~s own Sitting Room at Sapperton. JOHN CALLCOTT HORSLEY^ RA (1817-1903) A MERRY CHASE AT HADDON HALL signed and dated 1882^ 90 x 126cm Exhibited:Royal Academy^ 1882^ No 295. Illustrated: Blackburn (H)^ ed.^ Academy Notes 1882^ p32^ |Old English interior and costumes; a bright scene^ difficult to realise in days of sombre costume.| J C Horsley first saw Haddon whilst on a visit to the Barker family in Bakewell in 1835. He later described his impression of this most romantic of English manor houses: |Next morning we sallied forth and walked across the meadows to Haddon. It is absolutely unique... | |I was naturally filled with yearnings to paint pictures^ in which I could use as backgrounds the ancient halls and chambers^ and I dreamed many a dream of pictures to be^ as I sketched diligently the beautiful scenes before me.| (Recollections of a Royal Academician by John Callcott Horsley^ RA^ 1903^ pp101-2). Rent Day at Haddon Hall (1839) his first RA picture^ established his reputation. He was to return to Haddon as the setting for some of his most ambitious compositions. These include Coming Down to Dinner (1876) in Manchester City Galleries. In this^ as in A Merry Chase the scene is set in the same Staircase Hall^ with its venerable stone window and stained glass^ rich hangings^ wainscoting and all such antiquarian details^ wholly in keeping with the 16th century costumes. In both paintings Haddon has been ~restored~ to its former glory probably because Horsley~s Rent Day had been gently criticised for its display of expensive props and textiles being |placed in a desolate weather-stained hall as it is now.| The similarities of the the two are so marked that it is plausible to suppose Horsley was experimenting with staging different scenes in the same place^ just as a director would arrange the players on a stage. In the former picture the Steward stands^ in full ceremony^ at the foot of the stairs and a Negro servant is waiting at the head of the table^ almost out of sight. A Merry Chase^ as the title suggests is a much livelier scene. The Steward is replaced by a man with a tray of victuals^ whilst a scullion drops a pewter plate in the melee. ++In good ready to hang condition^ the varnish requiring a light clean^ lined and conserved for the present local private vendor many years ago and not offered for sale for in access of c 50 years.
