A fine James I pewter 'Rose-Water' dish, first quarter 17th century, with plain rim and booge, central raised boss, the rim stamped with the initials 'I.C' diam. 44cm. Provenance E. H. Eglington Collection, Hammerwich. Literature Illustrated H. H. Cotterell, Old Pewter, Its Makers and Marks, London, 1969, p. 120, pl. LII, fig. C 'Rose-Water' bowls appear from the 16th century onwards. They were used as finger bowls to rinse the grease from diners fingers whilst at the table, a fine example such a this would have belonged to a wealthy owner. H. H. Cotterell (op.cit) dates this example at circa 1620.
A Charles I small oak semi circular folding side table, second quarter 17th century, with triple turned legs and rear gateleg action h.61cm., w.60cm., d.38cm. For a comparable Charles I oak folding table with a similar triform base sold at auction see Good English Oak Furniture, Sotheby's London, 22nd October 1982, lot 25. The example that was offered in 1982 was illustrated by S. W. Wolsey and R. W.Luff, Furniture in England, The Age of the Joiner, London, 1968, figs. 72 and 73.
