2017 Shepherds Hut by Artisan Shepherds Huts Transmission: Mileage:Historians have traced shepherd's huts back to 1596, where an early text reads 'the Shepheard hath his cabin going upon a wheel for to move here and there at his pleasure'. They were a familiar site on the downlands of Southern England, existing as an important part of country people's lives. The most famous shepherds hut in history is described by Dorset novelist Thomas Hardy in the opening chapters of Far from the Madding Crowd.Artisan Shepherds Huts of Sussex was created by a specialist joiner who had had been working on listed, historic buildings and bespoke furniture before turning his talents and time creating meticulously crafted shepherd's huts from his medieval barn workshop in Sussex. Using traditional materials including the wheels being cast from molten iron using original patterns, floors of solid oak and all fittings such as door handles and window fastenings were high-quality reproductions. These huts can be used as a garden retreat, spare room, studio, office or more recently as additional space for AirBnB properties. This bespoke Artisan Shepherds Hut was commissioned five years ago by the sellers to provide them with additional accommodation at a cost of over £35,000. Measuring 491cm long, 230cm wide and 300cm high it was built on a farm tailer for easy movement. The floor is solid oak, and it is fully insulated. It has full electrical supply including lights, sockets and a water heater which is connected under the hut. The internal cladding is painted in Farrow & Ball colour No. 229 Elephant's Breath and the curtains were handmade in a luxury mustard velvet. The bedroom area has a double bed, bedside table and a chair, all of which can removed therefore creating maximum flexibility of the space. At the other end of the hut there is a sink and a wood fuelled small stove for cooking and heating. Easily moved, this useful hut is pleasantly decorated and would be a delight in any garden as an office, guest bedroom or just as a garden retreat.
