A Compound Achromatic Microscope, English, c. 1840, signed to the body tube ‘CARPENTER & WESTLEY 24 Regent Street, LONDON’. The microscope stands on a heavy cast iron flat tripod base with a tall pillar supporting the microscope below the stage on a compass-type joint, at the base is a plano-concave mirror in a gimbal, the stage is large with a sliding slide rest, body tube with course focus to the side with fine focus to the nosepiece, accessories in bottom drawer include, a Hugh Powell style 1in objective, can and leiberkuhn, a 1/4in French style objective, an inverted 1 1/2in objective, an inverted 2in objective, a medium power eyepiece, a 1/200in brass micrometer slide, a live box and other items, a large table bulls-eye condenser, in a mahogany case with a brass handle engraved ‘Homble, B. B. Morton’.Note: This model of microscope is associated with Powell & Lealand and known as the ‘Iron Stand’. It would appear that Powell & Lealand made this instrument to be retailed by Carpenter & Westly. The 1in objective is to Hugh Powell’s early design as are the stage forceps.
Charles Hoare's Double Slide Rule for the Iron & Steel Trade, English, late 19th century, in boxwood and brass, two slides with scales A, B, C and D, reversible to give Invd Line, WG scale (in this case indicating wire gauge), gauge points for unity and 5%, table of steel bar divisors, marked 'Designed and registered by C. Hoare'. Made only by Aston & Mander 25 Old Compton St Soho London, 62.5cm.
A Large 19th Century French Compound Microscope Outfit, French, c. 1877, signed in script to the body tube ‘Mon E. Hart & A. Praz A Prazmowski sucr, Rue Bonaparte, 1. Paris’, Standing on a heavy lead-filled ‘Y’ shaped base with tall support to the back, at the top are trunnions supporting the microscope to the underside of the stage, plano-concave mirror in a gimbal on an articulated arm, stage with focusing substage mount, simple stage with ebonite top plate and two clips, microscope can be rotated around the optical axis with a split stage, fine focus via screw with course focus via rack and pinion, body tube with single drawer tube, large French polished cabinet containing 6 numbered eyepieces, two substage accessories, large table bullseye, case of other accessories, green leather-covered case numbered 19266 with nine objectives all numbered and three stops, case with two locks with single key, with original catalogue dated 1877 and original table of lens combination strengths. Case measures 38cm wide.
A Very Fine Collection of 18th & 19th Century Microscope Spares, housed in an attractive French polished mahogany table collector's cabinet, drawer 1 contains mainly 18th century microscope parts including a large Bonnani stage, top eyepiece for a Martin drum microscope with an ebony lens holder, Jones most improved second stages, large frog plate and other items. Drawer 2 contains mainly objective lenses including 18th century leiberkuhn lenses simple button lenses, a complete set of lenses from a Carpenter type microscope, early Pritchard type achromatic objectives and other items. Drawer 3 contains various microscope accessories including some complicated eary compressors, a Jones most improved-style mirror gimbal & collar and other items. Drawer 4 contains live boxes, fish plates, a pocket screw barrel microscope case and other items. Drawer 5 contains lots of early microscope sliders, also included is the body of an early 18th century microscope made of Lignum. Cabinet measures 42cm tall, width 34cm.
A Watson 'Royal' Compound Microscope, English, dated 1915, signed to the rear of the foot ‘W Watson & Sons Ltd, 313 High Holborn, London', the microscope supported on a black lacquered tripod base supporting the body on trunnions, with plano-concave mirror in a gimbal on a sliding collar, substage collar with X-Y control via screw with rack and pinion focusing, with condensor with filter holder and iris, mechanical stage with X & Y controls, fine focus via screw, course rack and pinion focusing to back of body tube, body tube with mechanical drawer tube and second sliding drawer tube, with the following accessories: table bulls-eye condenser, a 1/6 in Watson objective, a 2in Watson objective, an eyepiece marked x5, an eyepiece marked x8, all in the original French polished mahogany cabinet. Cabinet height 33cm.
