French school ca. 1790."Portrait of a lady.Gouache on vellum.Size: 6,5 x 5 x 0,5 cm.Miniature of oval format representing a French lady dressed in the fashion of the end of the 18th century. Miniature portraits developed in Europe from the 16th century onwards. They consisted of small paintings set in objects such as medallions, table clocks or small boxes. The frame of these portraits was usually oval or circular. They were executed in a wide variety of techniques, such as oil on copper, pewter or ivory, gouaches on parchment or cardboard and, from the 18th century, watercolour on ivory. This delicate art was gradually lost from the second half of the 19th century, in parallel with the development of photography.

French school of ca. 1810."Portrait of a lady.Gouache on vellum.Size: 4,6 x 4 x 0,5 cm.Miniature of oval format representing a French lady of delicate features. The young lady has her hair combed with a high up-do that gives her elegance and subtlety. Miniature portraits developed in Europe from the 16th century onwards. They consisted of small paintings that were embedded in objects such as medallions, table clocks or small boxes. The frame of these portraits was usually oval or circular. They were executed in a wide variety of techniques, such as oil on copper, pewter or ivory, gouaches on parchment or cardboard and, from the 18th century, watercolour on ivory. Spanish school of the late 18th century."Portrait of a Cardinal.Gouache on vellum.Frame in bronze and stuccoed wood.Measurements: 7 x 5,5 cm; 14,5 x 13 x 1,5 cm (frame). In this miniature the author immortalises the half bust portrait of a cardinal. He wears a cardinal's cape and cassock, both in red, symbolising the cardinal's willingness to die for his faith. The delicate execution of the features and clothing indicate that this is the work of an avid painter who specialised in the genre of miniatures, which developed in Europe from the 16th century onwards. These were mainly paintings that were embedded in objects such as medallions, table clocks or small boxes. They were executed in a wide variety of techniques, such as oil on copper, tin or ivory, gouaches on parchment or cardboard and, from the 18th century, watercolour on ivory. This delicate art was gradually lost from the second half of the 19th century, in parallel with the development of photography.

Spanish School, XVII century. After Rubens (1577-1640)."Supper at the House of Simon the Pharisee". Oil on copper. It has repaintingMeasurements: 40 x 54 cm; 46 x 60 cm (frame).Rubens painted the oil on which this copper painting is based around 1618. It was a very copied painting at the time: in the Prado Museum there is a version made by Pieter Van Lint, also in copper. The present copper painting is very faithful to the original, reproducing each of the figures and using a contrasting palette. The scene, taken from the Gospels, narrates the moment when Mary, sister of Lazarus, anointed the feet of Jesus with her perfume and then dried them with her hair. The pictorial tradition has often depicted the female figure with long blonde hair and a sensual figure, which has led to her being confused with the sinful Magdalene. The present painting belongs to this tradition, thus enriching the possible interpretations of this biblical theme. Mary, with her bust uncovered and an intense rapture in her countenance, does not pay attention to what Christ is trying to tell her, with a gesticulating attitude. The other figures, gathered around the table, look at each other and look at Jesus with a somewhat dazed gaze, establishing significant silent dialogues between them. The architecture is limited to a spatial demarcation, open to a background of sky. This work is faithful to the narrative richness of Rubens' painting, with its variety of attitudes and gestures, captured with naturalism, as well as the plasticity of the drapery. The event took place in the dining room of the house of Simon (the Pharisee according to some, the leper according to others), where various figures are situated around a table presided over by Christ. According to the scriptures, while they were dining, Mary, the sister of Lazarus, took a pound of precious nard perfume and anointed Jesus' feet, wiped them and the scent of the perfume filled the whole house. On seeing this, some of the disciples criticise the woman's wastefulness because of the high price of the perfume poured out. Anointing consists basically of pouring aromatic substances on the body of Christ, which are described in the sources generically as oils, perfumes or ointments.

Lot 62

Italian school of the late 15th century."Annunciation".Oil on panel. In need of restoration. It has repainting and damage.Measurements: 64 x 99.5 x 4 cm.This panel depicts the episode of the Annunciation. It is a composition with a long tradition that brings together the figures of the Virgin and the archangel Gabriel, with the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove above. Mary is seated at a table on which a book rests. This device indicates that the Virgin was an educated person who could read, learned in the Scriptures, and at the same time introduces a narrative detail. The figure of the Virgin raises her hands to her breast in an attitude of devotion, as a sign of acceptance of the divine message, and tilts her head slightly downwards with a pleased expression and a slight smile. The scene is set in a rich, typically Renaissance interior, with semicircular windows that allow a view of the landscape, a typically Flemish aspect. Next to the Virgin rests a vase with lilies, alluding to her purity. The Annunciation is one of the most frequently depicted themes in Christian art as it marks the Incarnation of Christ as man and God, with Mary maintaining her purity and virginal state, points of great theological importance. Thus, throughout the evolution of the different styles in European art, there is a great variety of models and different details depending on the style, school and period.

Lot 71

French or Flemish school of the 18th century."Still life with lute".Oil on canvas.Period frame and stretcher.Measurements: 80 x 64 cm; 108 x 90 cm (frame). The still lifes with musical instruments emerged as a genre in the 17th century in all Europe, although it was in the Flemish school where it took more importance. In this still life of the French or Flemish school, the influence of Flanders is evident, but also the affinity with a genuinely French aristocratic language. A theatrical curtain is drawn back to reveal a table on which a still life of sumptuous objects rests next to a lute and sheet music. The skilful use of transparencies and glazes is expressed in the gleam of the enamel and gilt bronze of the chalice, as well as the precious stones that adorn the small jewellery box. A silver urn embossed with festoons is decorated with obsidian inlay. The candlestick, carved with masks, recalls the symbolism of candles in Baroque still lifes associated with the transience of life and vanitas. In this painting, however, moralising symbolism is subsumed by sensualist pre-eminence. All the objects rest on a draped canvas, which subtly absorbs the play of chiaroscuro. Behind the parapet, a landscape opens up in a wide atmospheric perspective: a river meanders capriciously through the valley, surrounded by promontories with peaks bluish in the evening light.

By 1841, he had moved to 15 Wentworth place, Mile End, London, where he remained until at least 1852. In 1882 he was listed as working at 195 Burdett Road, Mile End, London; this is the last record that can be found of him. Throughout his career he was always listed as a watchmaker. Interestingly, a gold watch signed 'Griffiths Mile-End-Road, London' on the dial was used in evidence for a trial regarding the murder of a passenger on the Brighton Railway in 1881. The watch belonged to the victim and was later found hidden in the perpetrator's shoe. The perpetrator was asked to tell the police what the watch's movement number was, 16,261, and the name of the maker. He failed to correctly identify either, which helped suggest to police that he may have been involved in the murder, rather then a victim as he initially claimed. He was found guilty after a compelling four-day long trial.Kelly (1843) Post Office London Street Directory, London: Kelly's Directories Ltd.University of Leicester (2022) Historical Directories of England & Wales: London 1808-1915.
