The two front doors similarly decorated to verso and opening to reveal an elaborately inlaid architectural interior set with seven drawers, two secret, and further drawer below. A George III mahogany ladies harlequin writing/dressing table, the ice-birch banded and strung divided folding top opening to reveal two lidded compartments, a sprung loaded pigeonholes and small drawer compartments, above a single dummy drawer, which drops to reveal an inset green leather adjustable writing slope and a fitted writing compartment, above a fitted dressing drawer and a concave tambour cupboard, raised on simulated bamboo turned tapering legs terminating in caps and castors, 91 cm high x 66 cm wide x 55 cm deep. The present table is almost identical to designs by Thomas Shearer which was published in The Cabinet-Makers` London Book of Prices, which was distributed by the London Society of Cabinet-Makers in 1788. Thomas Shearer was the main contributor for this publication supplying seventeen plates from twenty design plates. The recognised cabinet maker Thomas Shearer has possibly taken previous designs by Rudd and improved on the design. The present table represent a more elaborate example to similar designs published by Sheraton and Hepplewhite. A closely related example sold at Sotheby`s, 20 October 1972, lot 105. C.G. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House, Vol II, p.342, item 429
