Information from The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture…There was no notable advances in the methods of enlargement until 1800 when Richard Gillow obtained a patent for an improvement in the construction of dining tables calculated to reduce the number of legs pillar and claws and to facilitate the enlargement and reduction in 1805 Richard Brown patented device by which the two ends of the table frame are connected by pieces of wood, so join together as to form what they company called lazy tongs they did not entirely supersede the earlier methods of enlargement.
