A William IV or early Victorian black japanned and parcel giltwood dressing table mirror, circa 1835,: by Town and Emanuel of London, the angle adjustable oval plate reverse painted with birds and flowers in a foliate border descending to a peacock and peahen on rockwork; within an oval frame with openwork foliate surround and semi-circular bracket supports; the stepped and serpentine fronted base with two shallow upper drawers above two deeper drawers, the third drawer down with printed paper label to the underside, 'Town & Emanuel, 105 New Bond St. london, Manufacturers of BUHL MARQUETRIE, RESNER & CARVED FURNITURE... BY APPOINTMENT TO HER MAJESTY...', decorated overall with foliage in rectangular reserves on a tessellating ground, on bracket feet; 78cm high, 43cm wide, 30cm deep.*Notes Town & Emanuel were situated at 103 New Bond Street from 1830 to 1849, when their extraordinary stock (including items acquired from the Venetian Doge's Palace) was dispersed by Christie's. In their heyday they supplied furniture and works of art to all of the very highest echelons of fashionable and discerning society, including the Duke of Buckingham, the Duke of Buccleuch and Queen Adelaide, whose arms appear on the Royal Warrant printed on the label on this lot.
