Lot 1

18TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL, full length portrait of a young boy with powdered wig wearing a red jacket, gold braided tunic and red socks, standing against a cloth covered table, a pistol in his right hand, oil on canvas, 47" x 39". (see illustration on front cover). Footnote: By family tradition the sitter has always been known as Edward Rotherham Captain of the Royal Sovereign and Flag-Captain to Collingwood at Trafalgar. Indeed Rotherham was an ancestor of our current vendor whose family also have strong connections with Hexham, Northumberland (also Rotherham's birthplace). However, as we are of the opinion that the portrait dates from around 1730/1740 (Rotherham was born in 1753) the connection appears spurious. Whether the sitter could be a forbear of the Rotherham family is open to debate. The lot is sold together with three hand-written extracts detailing Rotherham's life and exploits written by an ancestor of our current vendor.
