Tiefe: 48 cm.Ausführung des Möbels 1930/31.Eines von drei in Mahagoni ausgeführten Exemplaren, ein viertes in Walnuss mit Ledertableau ist ebenfalls kürzlich bekannt geworden. Le Bourgeois betätigte sich fast ausschließlich als Tierkünstler und fertigte gerne Monumentalskulpturen an. Er war von Kindesbeinen an mit den nötigen Werkzeugen durch seinen Aufenthalt in der Restaurierungswerkstatt seines Vaters bekannt und teilte seine Vorliebe für die Skulptur des Mittelalters. Die stilisierten geometrischen Linien der Tiere, wie hier bei dem Elefanten zu sehen, lassen ihn als Art déco-Künstler erscheinen. Er fertigte nicht nur Tiere in Holz als Skulpturen, sondern auch Flachreliefs, die in Möbel eingefügt werden konnten. Ebenso fertigte er architektonische Elemente, wie Kapitelle und Treppenpfosten. Der vorliegende Elefantentisch steht auf einem gestuften Podest.Provenienz:Sammlung Monsieur Vieillard. Anmerkung: Das Centre Pompidou bewahrt ein weiteres Modell eines Elefanten des Künstlers auf mit der Inventarnummer LUX0.61.S. Das 1921 im Pavillon de Marsan ausgestellte Exemplar wurde von M. Sehliwger in Grasse gekauft. Das zweite Exemplar wurde von M. Ducham, einem Kunstsammler, bestellt und das dritte Exemplar wurde am 20. Juli 2010, in Kopie.In einem dunklen Inneraum auf einer alten Holzplatte, die nahe der rechten Seiten mit einem faltenreichen Samttuch bedeckt ist, die sorgsam arrangierten Objekte: Im Zentrum eine angeschnittene Zitrone, deren leuchtend gelbe Schale teils über die Tischkante hinweg hängt, dahinterliegend eine weitere Zitrone, rechts zwei dunkelrote Pflaumen, dahinter ein großer Kürbis und links von ihm Rispen mit hellen und dunklen Weintrauben. An der vorderen rechten Tischecke liegend zudem ein erlegter Vogel mit braunem schwarzgetupftem Gefieder und hellem Brustbereich. Malerei in der typischen Manier des Stilllebensmalers, der in den 1650er-Jahren in Antwerpen tätig war und der manchmal mit dem gleichnamigen flämischen Portraitmaler verwechselt wird.
