Provenance: By descent from Douglas Shepherd (1922-1989), a designer and architect working on public houses for the brewery firm Ind Coope. He was heavily influenced by and was a serious collector of Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau, including leading designers and artists such as Charles Ashlee and Jessie M King. He assembled a large collection from the 1950s to 1970s. His book collection was subsequently sold through Sotherby’s and in 2013 his magnificent silver collection by Archibald Knox and others was sold through these rooms.

Highly unusual silver mounted Boer War bullet, adapted to a table cigar lighter, inscribed. 'Begbie's explosion, Johannesburg, Boer War 1900, by Child & Child, 18.5cm high. NB: A blue plaque at the site of the explosion reads: 'On 12 October 1899 the Boers Commandeered Begbie's Foundry for armaments production. On 24 April 1900 a massive explosion in the munitions store destroyed part of the foundry and houses nearby. Sabotage was suspected. Highly unusual ecclesiastical oak refectory table/monks bench, probably 17th century, with massive single plank top raised on shaped trestle ends united by a substantial foot stretcher, 275 x 54cmThe table is missing all pegs and wedges to secure the joints. It does construct and is stable without these but would benefit from replacement parts. Top is solid plank which is bowed and with some splits, marks and stains and plenty of character, splits to ends and wear commensurate with significant age
