Lot 12A

Egypt, Third Intermediate Period to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A handsome cartonnage panel from a sarcophagus depicting two and a half scenes. The panel at the top shows the body of the deceased on a lion-headed table, flanked by two women and with a ba bird soaring overhead, representing the journey between the worlds of the living and the dead. Below the figure are four oversized canopic jars, each with a head of a Son of Horus. The middle panel features the Sons of Horus, each mummiform, two on either side facing a bar of hieroglyphs that is through the center of the panel. The bottom panel, which is only partial, shows four identical wigged heads atop mummiform bodies, each holding what looks like a spear. Size of cartonnage inside of shadow box, which is nearly the same size: 8.2" W x 12.25" H (20.8 cm x 31.1 cm)The four Sons of Horus are Duamutef (jackal form), Imsety (human form), Hapi (baboon form), and Qebehsenuef (hawk form). Horus's sons were the ones charged with protecting the internal organs, as they had originally been charged with protecting the body of Osiris; as a result, their heads often form the lids of canopic jars. Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Dr. Sid Port collection, California, USA, acquired in the 1970s Condition: Piece is a fragment with some losses at edges and craquelure on surface. Small, deeper cracks on the upper panel, but this does not obscure the motifs. Motifs are very clear and the colors are very bright. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #146595

Lot 7

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, ca. 712 to 332 BCE. An incredibly striking and rare opaque sky blue glass bowl, probably made for holding condiments like salt or other spices at the table. From the outside, it presents a conical form, with shallow, sloping sides; the interior has thick, vertical sides roughly halfway down its length before abruptly changing to a conical form above its small, flat base. The bowl is mold made, its sides smooth. Age has given its interior a pretty pearlescence through which the original color of the glass shines. Size: 2.5" W x 1.7" H (6.4 cm x 4.3 cm) Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection Condition: Small depression to interior center probably from a bubble that popped during its creation. No pontil mark as it was mold made; a pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. #146058

Lot 9a

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, reign of Ramesses II, ca. 1279 to 1213 BCE. A fine votive plaque of a small size, hand-carved from chalky-white limestone. The ovoid plaque boasts a relatively flat base with a semicircular top border, somewhat smooth peripheries, and a rough verso. The obverse displays a standing warrior figure on the right, his hands raised in reverence before the Pharaoh Ramesses II (also Rameses II, Ramesses the Great). The Pharaoh wears a folded skirt beneath striated armor (he is also known as the Warrior King), holds two small objects in his hands, and dons the white crown of Upper Egypt with a frontal uraeus. A small table with an alabastron rests in front of the pharaoh's legs, and the encircled pharaonic cartouche is incised above Ramesses' head. Faint traces of the original white and red-orange pigment used to accentuate the carved details are still visible and suggest this piece was at one time painted with bright colors. Size: 3.875" W x 5.2" H (9.8 cm x 13.2 cm). Provenance: Dr. Jerome R. Johnson collection, Havre de Grace, Maryland, USA; ex-The Antiquities Gallery, Beverly Hills, California, USA Condition: Small losses to obverse, peripheries, and reverse as shown. Minor nicks and abrasions to all surfaces, with fading to original pigmentation, and softening to some finer details. Light earthen deposits throughout, and nice traces of original pigmentation along obverse side. #146711
