Painted on the slopes of Table Mountain looking down over the city towards Signal Hill, showing the lower part of Platteklep Gorge, a vista that extends downward to the town and the bay below, where three Malay women do their laundry. Along with this piece comes a year by year biography listing all of his professional achievements as well as a handwritten note from a previous owner. Reads: The scene is the lower part of Platteklep Gorge looking down at the town and Bay. On the left is Signal Hill. from the way I remember this place very clearly from my childhood. The small stream, which runs down the mountain, widens here to form some pools. The building was called the wash house (I think). My father used to take me for walks. We would have our “peissi” higher up near a small pool whether I would watch the tadpoles or young frogs. When we lived in one of the terrace houses in Hatfield St there were no facilities for laundering. The coloured / Malay washerwomen used to arrive with a large basket on her head. The laundry was counted, the list agreed, and off they went to this spot where it was washed. A few days later it reappeared in the basket spotterly clean and trowed. When I left home the houses were slowly creeping up the lower slope of the mountains. I wonder whether they have reached this spot.

(Scottish, 1917-1998) Still life with Striped Cloth Signed and dated 'Morrocco - 84/86' (bottom right) Framed & glazed 72cm x 120cm (28.5" x 47") A late 20th century 1984-86 oil on board still life painting by Scottish artist Alberto Morrocco. The painting depicting a still life with table, flower vase & striped cloth. Framed & glazed with label to verso for British Art Galleries, Royal Academy of Arts. 'I became much more conscious of the formal values that a still-life can actually give freedom for - so that I began to look at still-life from this point of view, not simply depicting a few apples or oranges or a couple of jugs and so forth, as a kind of theme - but simply the relationship of the shape of a jug to the shape of a compote or the shape of a pear or the colour of a few objects on a white table-cloth against something in the background. You can actually use the shapes within a still-life just as you would in an abstract because they don't necessarily have to tell any story - apart from their own existence' (C.Young and V. Keller, Alberto Morrocco 1917-1998, Edinburgh, 2008, p. 92). This lot is subject to Artist's Resale Right.
