IRVING (Washington; 1783-1859) Autograph letter signed to George Petrie Esq., Clerk of Orkney, dated March 16th 1857, thanking him for sending a genealogical table or family tree of Irving's family, mentioning his nephew's visit to the Orkney Islands; Irving says that he has asked his publishers to put by for Petrie a copy of his works, and expresses his gratitude "for the genealogical chain by which you have connected me so closely with Orkney". Two pages, framed. Also, a 15 volume bound set of Irving's Works, New York 1856, 8vo, a.e.g., folding maps or charts, one vol. with signature of George Petrie (16) Note: Washinton Irving's family were descended from William De Irwin, secretary and armour-bearer of Robert the Bruce, whose son had come to Orkney. The nephew referred to in the letter was Pierre, Rev Pierre Paris Irving, who visited Orkney at the end of a European tour. His visit was received with delight and he was shown the family home and quantities of historic documents, departing with three of the oldest. He took them back to America, where Washington and the rest of the family were delighted to find themselves descended from Irving of Bonshaw, famous for sheltering Robert the Bruce. George Petrie, the Orkney County Clerk, sent Washington Irving an expanded family tree, "in token of the pleasure he had taken in connecting him so closely with Orkney".
