The Butterfield-type instrument with a hinged gnomon, featuring a bird pointer. Underside with an engraved table of latitudes for 21 cities, mainly French to include Paris, Brest, Bordeaux, Nantes, Turin, Madrid and others. The instrument is housed in a red velvet lined, black leather case.Instrument is 7.6cm long, 6.5cm wide.Compass is in working order, glass intact, patination to the body (see images). The leather case is worn with one area of loss to the back of the top. Locking mechanism functional, red velvet interior is threadbare in areas with circular impression of the compass dial on the lower half.
