A late 18th century carved silvered wood console table, having a marble top, the frieze as two cherubs flanking a bird of prey, amidst scroll flowers and foliage, the hipped cabriole supports adorned with fruit and flowers, with scroll terminals, max w.100cm, h.76cm, marble top dimensions 45.5 x 75cmReputedly, this table originally stood in the 'silver room' of Château de Fontainebleau, and was a gift to a loyal servant of the Palace. The Château de Fontainebleau was the favoured residence and hunting lodge of the kings of France from the Middle Ages through to Napoleon III. The 'silver room' may refer to the Boudoir de la Reine which was Marie Antoinette's bedroom and lavishly decorated with silvered panels and furniture by the Rousseau brothers in 1786. During the French Revolution the Château did not suffer any significant damage, but all the furniture was sold at auction (much of which was returned during the 1960s when the Château was reopened as a museum).
