A Chinese polychrome painted carved wooden temple deity, probably 18th century, seated upon a red throne with lion mask terminals to the arms, her feet resting upon a low table with a draped cloth finely painted with floral and foliate decoration, the figure wearing a richly decorated gilded robe and head dress decorated with green clouds in relief, surrounding the mask of a Buddhistic lion in high relief, 18½in. (47cm.) high, very original, losses to decoration. * Losses to painted, gilded and gesso relief decoration throughout, most notably to collar, lower front of robe and front of plinth base. All but one of the mirrored glass 'jewels' missing from the belt. Figure originally had earrings, which are missing. Paint loss around left eye. Small chip to centre front of headress. Two old shrinkage cracks to back of throne and also joint splits to front left corner of plinth where a piece of wood was 'let in' during construction. Probable old glued repair to lion mask to right arm of chair. No other repairs or restoration - appears to be very original.

Lot 376

Professor J. Ingegnetti (Italian, 1834-1901), Testing the swords oil on canvas, signed lower right, titled to slip, extensively inscribed to canvas verso, in a good period frame 21¾ x 29¾in. (55.25 x 75.5cm.) * Canvas not lined. 2½in. vertical split to canvas above door behind the table. Marked craquelure to the centre and left hand side of the canvas. Some older tiny retouches scattered across the canvas and minor strengthening visible to detail. Canvas is quite slack. Frame good overall, with some wear to gilding.

(33 x 48.9cm.).* Provenance: Label for M. Newman Fine Art Dealers, St James's, London on the reverse** Good condition overall - surface even, clean and basically ready to display. Well framed and frame in good condition. When examined under UV, some minor retouching can be seen around the margins and there are a few other very small retouches elsewhere. There are also two larger, thumbnail size patches of retouching to the black area in the bottom of the wine glass and just to the left of the glass.

A Victorian burr walnut reading table by Gillows of Lancaster, the rectangular moulded top of adjustable height, with two ratchet supported reading stands with detachable book rests and two frieze drawers, raised on a turned and fluted column to a platform base with outset feet with floral bosses and lappet carved feet with castors, one drawer stamped 'GILLOWS & Co. 10158', 33 x 19½in. (84 x 49.5cm.), height adjustable from 28in. to 40in. (71cm. to 101.5cm.). * Appears to be largely original overall, but would benefit from some restoration. Some blisters beneath the veneer to top in a few places and a few small veneer repairs which show darker staining to one edge of the top. Polish worn to moulded edge of top and one side of frieze is a little faded. Adjustable mechanism works correctly and rachet to book rests in good cdn. Two shrinkage cracks to top of column and one larger to base of column. General dings, scratches and marks to base and some tiny veneer chips to edges.

Lot 822

A fine Louis XVI mahogany, satinwood, ebony and ormolu table à écrire in the manner of Jean-Henri Riesener, the rectangular top with moulded brass edge and inset gilt tooled leather within a lattice veneered border, over two frieze drawers with conforming lattice and dot decoration and original brasses, divided by a central ormolu appliqué depicting pair of love birds and flanked by acanthus paterae to the angles, raised on square tapered legs with brass mounted incuse angles and square sabots, 43 x 25¼in. (109 x 64cm.), 28¾in. (73.5cm.) high, the leather a/f. * Provenance: Purchased by the vendor from an auction of the property of the Dutch royal family in London in the second half of the 1940s. The Dutch royal family, including Queen Wilhemina, her daughter Princess Juliana and her husband Prince Bernhard, had been evacuated to London in May 1940 and Queen Wilhemina and Prince Bernhard remained there until the Netherlands were liberated at the end of the war in 1945, Princess Juliana relocating to Canada during the Blitz with her children.

Lot 824

An Anglo-Chinese rosewood and mother of pearl tripod table, 19th century, the circular top inlaid with a Chinese cockerel, trees and clouds, within a dotted border, the frieze inlaid with birds and insects in flight, on a mother of pearl strung baluster column to three cockerel inlaid swept supports with scrolled toes, 18½in. (47cm.) diameter, 31in. (78.75cm.) high. * In good condition overall, with no losses from the inlay. The MOP is lifting very slightly in just a few places but is very stable. Very good original surface and patina overall. The frieze has some discolouration to the polish and a shrinkage crack across the veneer. There is also a piece of moulding from the underside edge of the top which has been off and glued back in place. No repairs to top, column or legs.
