A Chinese silk red-ground embroidered silk 'Elephant' table hanging, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong, with central caparisoned elephant below a roundel with two chilong dragons enclosing a shou symbol, decorated with the symbols of happiness and longevity and other auspicious symbols throughout, key fret and abstract chilong border, overall 92cm high x 103cmThe upper section of this exquisitely woven table frontal is decorated with classic Chinese symbols of happiness and longevity. The longevity symbolism of the peach is derived from its association with the most important female deity in Chinese mythology, Xi Wangmu (Mother Goddess of the West), who grew peaches of immortality in her gardens in the Western Paradise. The undulating chi dragons flanking the central 'Shou' (longevity) is a common motif on wares made for the Court, and strongly suggests an Imperial attribution. The panel is replete with a variety of symbols expressing multiple auspicious wishes. The word for vase ping 瓶 in fact is homophone with 'peace' ping 平, and elephant puns with xiang 象 meaning 'sign' or 'portent'. Together, these two words form a rebus for the phrase taiping youxiang 太平有象, meaning 'Where there is peace, there is an omen (or elephant)'. Pairs of elephants carrying vases thus became an important part of the Imperial throne regalia. The lotus, one of the Eight Buddhist Emblems, is also a homophone with the Chinese character he 和 meaning 'harmony'. Representing purity and aspiration, the lotus, like the pomegranate, also conveys the auspicious symbolism of fertility, for the multitude of its petals, leaves and seeds.
