*WWI. A group of three to Lieutenant J.D Deacon MC, Gloucestershire Regiment, 1914-15 Star (Lieut. J.D. Deacon. Glouc R.), British War and Victory Medals (Capt. J.D. Deacon.), extremely fine MC London Gazette 28.8.1917. Lieutenant John Durand Deacon served in Gallipoli from May 1915, and on Cape Helles from 10 June 1915, interestingly after his death his widow inherited a great deal of wealth and fell victim to the infamous Acid Bath Murderer John George Haigh. An unfortunate chance meeting between them at the dining table of a hotel in 1949. Haigh who had serious debts paid great interest to Mrs Durand Deacon as she explained to him about her idea for manufacturing plastic finger nails. Haigh was most interested and offered to take her to his "workshop" in Crawley, he drove her there and shot her in the back of the head, stripped her of her fur coat and dumped her in a 40-gallon metal drum of sulphuric acid. Haigh committed six murders in total and was sent to the gallows in 1949. (3)
