Mr Charles Cook, father-in-Law to Percy Thrower, was transferred from Lord Knowsley's Estate in Lancashire at the direction of His Majesty King George V, to be appointed Head Gardener at Windsor, in 1924. Here he remained until just after the death of King George V when The Prince of Wales was due to become King. However, it is believed that Mrs Wallace Simpson instructed that all the Peach Blossom be cut off the Peach Vines in the Hot Houses at Windsor as she wanted them as decoration. It is reputed in Percy Thrower's Book "My Life Time of Gardening" that word of this reached H. M. Queen Mary who was then living at SandringhamAs a result, Charles Cook and his family departed Windsor in 1936 and relocated to Sandringham for Mr Cook was appointed Head Gardener at Sandringham. It is believed that Mr C H Cook remained in this post, we think until the early 1950's whereupon he retired and moved from his House within the Grounds of Sandringham, to a very nice Bungalow overlooking the Wash in Dersingham, a couple of miles from Sandringham House. Many of the furnishings were purchased by Queen Mary herself. Her Majesty visited "Chandina", as the house was named, and took Tea. She may well have sat at this very table. Charles Cook died in 1961 and is buried in the grounds of Sandringham Church.
