A large circular bespoke 1970's South African stinkwood dining table by Jonker Brothers of Knysna The moulded top above a turned shaft, on moulded quadripartite downswept legs, labelled to the underside 'Stinkwood table and chairs made at Knysna, S.Africa in 1976 for Chastleton Glebe', 184cm diameter, 76cm high. Provenance: Prue Leith, CBE the British-South African restaurateur, chef, caterer, television presenter/broadcaster, businesswoman, journalist, cookery writer and novelist. Commissioned from the Jonker Brothers by Prue Leith in 1976 for her previous home in The Cotswolds, Chastleton Glebe.

CALLIGRAPHY -- DEMMELTRAADT, J.H. v. Miniature calligraphed texts of the Ten Commandments and the Lord's Prayer, both written in a circular space of Ø 18mm ("binnen den omtrek van een stuivertje"). The Ten Commandments written as a part of a still life (82 x 92 mm) in colour wash with books on a table and flowers in a vase, signed in pencil and mounted on a larger piece of fold. paper. The Lord's Prayer written in black ink on a circular space within decorative green and yellow borders. -- Added: Autograph letter by Demmeltraadt to J.H. Knoops with respect to these 2 miniature manuscripts, dated April 28th 1827, in which the calligrapher also claims that he did not use an eye-glass!

Cont. blind tooled vellum over wooden brds. w. raised bands and brass clasps & catches. (Top of spine rep., upper joint partly split, lower back corner a bit dam., stamp on engr. ti, a few small rep. in places, a few marg. stains, 1 plate loose, but else a fine and complete copy). NOTE:Very good, complete and clean copy of one of the most famous 17th c. townbooks. Lodovico Guicciardini (1521-89), Italian businessman and author, left Italy in 1538 and settled down in Antwerp. This is the fourth edition in Dutch of his famous description of the principalities and cities of the Low Countries. The table of contents of this Janssonius edition described in Guicciardini Illustratus, 23 has 2 more plates 'Rheinberg' and 'Middelburg-Stadt-huys' not present in our edition but also not called for in the 'Bladt-Wijser'. NOTE:Famous biography of Charlemagne, providing much direct information about his life and character, written sometime between 817 and 830. Einhard's literary model for this work was the 'Lives of the Caesars' by Suetonius. Good copy.
