THOMAS FAED R.S.A., R.A. (1826-1900)'A Family Gathering'signed with monogram 'T.F.' (lower right)oil on canvas15 x 20 in (38.2 x 50.8cm) Provenance: From a deceased estate, HerefordshireThis painting depicts three generations of a poor Highland family, who crowd around a table in a humble cottage interior. The elderly grandmother is flanked by two of her daughters and other family members who listen with intent to the reading of a book. They support each other. There appears to be a general air of concern. The only exception is the young boy seated by the window who is lost in his own thoughts, too young perhaps to care. The painting bears an inscription on a label on the stretcher 'Reading the old Book'. Faed exhibited a work 'Reading the Bible' at the 1846 Royal Scottish Academy Exhibition. He also painted a number of other works with subject-matter associated with cottage piety. In the mid 1860's the Victorian art dealer Louis Flatow briefly had in his possession a painting titled 'The Bible in the Cottage'.The compositional grouping of the figures in the painting at Brightwells has certain similarities with those in another painting by Faed titled 'Sunday in the Backwoods' (Wolverhampton Art Gallery) Faed was among a number of Scottish nineteenth century artists who moved south to work in London. It prompted a mid -Victorian correspondent to proclaim at a Royal Academy banquet 'Instead of carrying arms over the Border, Scotsman are carrying Art to the South, and even the English members of the (Royal) Acadeny would admit that its Scottish members are not the least interesting or cultured of the group that it includes within its pale'.In 1852 Thomas Faed moved to London, where he became a close friend of the author Charles Dickens. He was elected an ARA in 1861 and RA in 1864. His paintings of Scottish rural life were based initially on the compositions of Sir David Wilkie; and he later developed his own style of social realism, specialising in paintings of peasant life with a strong accent on pathos: it was said that he favoured 'departures for the Colonies or Heaven!'Faed's work particularly reflects the artist's interest in the plight of the rural poor and their beneficent acts of charity. His approach as an artist to subjects of destitution, homelessness, emigration and poverty were sometimes more romantic than realistic, but the social commentary of his genre paintings was widely admired. His work according to the Magazine of Art 'struck a note which appealed 'to the learned and unlearned'
