Lot 651

Aime-Gabrielle-Adolphe Bourgoin (1824-1874) French The Love Letter Signed, oil on panel, 39cm by 30.5cm Provenance: Cooling Galleries, London E. Stacy Marks, Ltd. The edges of the panel are covered at the reverse. The panel is flat, and no splits are visible. There are four areas of radiating cracking to paint and ground (two top and two bottom) coinciding with where the nails hold the panel in the frame indicating some slight tension in these areas, but the cracks are not elevated. A few other scattered age cracks, a few in the white skirt slightly elevated but secure. There is a small white loss/abrasion under the rebate bottom right corner. There has been a campaign of retouching, mostly to cover thinness in paint where white dots presumably emerging from the ground are visible. The overpaint is opaque and not quite the right colour, but has not been excessively applied. This retouching can be found in small touches in the tapestry, around the quill, along side edges, into the floor particularly on the left, to the dresser base, the base of the table, the cloth on the dresser, the skirt, touches to the hair and the eyebrows. Also to some minor damages along top edge. There are a few scattered minor matt patches and splashes, but the varnish is fairly glossy and even and not appreciably yellowed. A light coating of surface dirt and accretions.
