Parker, 1816, eight wood-engraved illustrations, lightly offset to text, some minor edge fraying and creasing, final leaf of text with horizontal tear, front pastedown with early ink inscription, original blue printed wrappers with early stitched textile repairs, a little dusty, small 4to, together with The Multiplication Table in Verse, Embellished with Sixteen Engravings, Edward Wallis, circa 1825, 14 leaves printed on one side only, first (title) and last leaves form pastedowns, hand-coloured illustrations, some minor edge fraying and creasing, stitching gone, original printed wrappers, lacking spine, somewhat soiled and frayed, slim 8vo, with two others similer: Mother Bunch and Tom Hop O' My Thumb, hand-coloured illustrated chapbook, published by E. Wallis, circa 1830; [The House that Jack Built], early 19th century, both defective First item rare. COPAC lists only the British Library copy. Not in Gumuchian, Muir, Halkett & Laing, or Osborne. Grandpapa Easy's Jacko's Merry Method of Learning the Pence Table [drop-title], circa 1840, hand-coloured wood engravings throughout, first and last leaves forming pastedowns, first page with early ownership signature at head, occasional fox spots, original printed green wrappers, some light marks and a trifle frayed to extremities in a few places, large slim 8vo, together with Grandmamma Easy's New Story About Old Daddy Longlegs, New York: D. Appleton [cover-title], circa 1850s, hand-coloured wood engravings throughout, first and last leaves forming pastedowns, some faint offsetting, original printed tan wrappers, some light marginal dust-soiling, spine slightly split at ends, upper cover with two small ink blots, rear cover with short closed tear in upper edge, large slim 8vo First item: Osborne, p.711. Dean published his series of Grandmamma and Grandpapa Easy's Pictorial Books, with their attractive coloured engravings, in the 1840s. American publishers quickly took up the idea, producing their own stories in a similar format. All of these publications, with their potentially fragile wrappers, are scarce. (2)

*Brock (Henry Matthew, 1875-1960). A set of drawings for The Breakfast Table Series, by Oliver Wendall Holmes, published by J.M. Dent, 1902, approximately 140 pencil sketches on paper, mostly figure and composition studies, e.g. a jester, a mermaid, men boxing, children at school, a singer and pianist, the Grim Reaper, children hitching a lift on the back of a carriage, a barber, viewing the Elgin Marbles, a harpist, boys fighting, etc., a few sheets with drawings on both sides, some spotting and marks, most with pin holes to margins, occasional short edge-tears and minor creasing, sheet size 28.5 x 22cm (11.25 x 8.75ins), contained in an envelope addressed to the artist, and titled by him in pencil 'Sketches for Breakfast Table Series' (approx.140)

Lot 610

*Craig (Frank, 1874-1918). I flung him to the ground, 1913, grisaille watercolour, heightened with bodycolour, depicting a gentleman standing over his prostrate opponent and upturned chair, beside a dining table in an oak-panelled room, signed and dated lower right, 46.5 x 28cm (18.25 x 11ins), framed and glazed, with label of J.S. Maas & Co Ltd on backboard Provenance: Purchased by the current owner from the Maas Gallery in 1987. Portrait artist and illustrator Frank Craig studied at the Lambeth School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. His illustrative output for periodicals was profuse; he worked for Scribner's Magazine, The Graphic, Harper's and Nash's Magazine, amongst others. He was also much in demand as a book illustrator, and his work accompanied some of the era's most famous authors: Rudyard Kipling, R.W. Chambers, F. Marion Crawford, Arnold Bennett, and Maurice Hewlett, to name a few. Craig exhibited at the Royal Academy and in Paris, and won a gold medal for portraiture at one of the early 20th century Paris salons. He is particularly known for his use of lighting and his ability to stage a scene. (1)
