The Tempests have owned land at Broughton, near Skipton, time out of mind" although Broughton Hall was originally built in 1595 by Henry Tempest and rebuilt fairly drastically in Palladian manner in c. 1755 for Stephen Tempest. His grandson another Stephen re-furnished the house to the tune of over £2000 using Gillows a firm much favoured by the Catholic gentry of the north (being Lancastrian in origin and themselves Catholic) and he also much enlarged the house to neo-Classical designs by William Atkinson in 1810-1813. Gillows again carried out some additional re-furnishing this time in neo-Greek taste. A final series of alterations and additions were made by George Webster from 1839 to include the colossal porte cochere for Stephen Tempest`s son Sir Charles Robert Tempest 1st Bt. The gardens were re-modelled by W. A. Nesfield in 1855. Although the baronetcies became extinct the Tempests still reside at Broughton"
