JAN HARRELL (American/Texas b. 1952) A GROUP OF TWO ENAMEL ON COPPER PLATES, "Fig," AND "Lemon," FROM "The Banquet of the Muse," 2007, enamel and silkscreen overlays on copper, signed, titled and dated verso in sgraffito, "Jan, 2007, Fig," 16" x 15"; and "Jan, 2007, Lemon," 16" x 14 1/4". Note: Jan Harrell elaborates on The Banquet of the Muse, "This is part of a table setting made for a larger than life woman, full of life, joy, and a somewhat naughty nature. Pomegranates, peaches, figs, kiwis - fully ripe and moist were the dinner plates she ate from. Fruit that when bitten into, their juices run down the muse’s neck and stained her body with nectar." The workshop was held at Kent State University, Ohio where access to large kilns enabled the artist to create a monumental table setting presentation of whimsical enameled works of art. A WILLIAM IV SATINWOOD, KINGWOOD, MAHOGANY PARQUETRY INLAID OCTAGONAL TRUMPET LADY'S WORK AND GAMES TABLE, ENGLISH, the octagonal top inlaid with tunbridge checkerboard within a chamfered, barber pole and kingwood band inlaid edge, lifting open to a conical interior, fitted with silk lined compartments, raised on a pyramidal cone shaped support, flat turned disc and ball socle, issuing tripodal, leaf carved cabriole legs, terminating in a central ball and disc finial. Height: 28 1/4" Diameter: 17 1/2" Condition: Some repairs, losses, damages, hardware repalced, base likely rebuilt or added later, silk has some tears, losses and stains, no lids for interior, but overall in good condition, wear commensurate with age and use. AN AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE CHERRY GATELEG GAME TABLE, LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY, the nicely figured cherry hinged top with rounded edge above a single frieze drawer enclosing a pair of bronze bale form handles with "C" scroll and foliate details on stylized floret back plates, over molded trim raised on square form Marlborough legs with fretwork bracket corners and ending on conforming block feet; height: 28 1/4" width: 32 1/8" depth: 18", opened depth: 36 1/4". Provenance: Estate of Francis E. And Henrietta C. Judson, Wayne, Pennsylvania. Condition: Good restored condition for American tables of this age, use and materials including but not limited to expected old surface scratches, marks, some very small burn spots on top when opened, dings, age cracks, old repairs, a few small restorations, and normal surface buildup in crevices. The brackets are probably later. The bronze handles are old, worn and stylistically work for this table, when removed they reveal nice original darker patina with an outline exactly following the floret backplates. A CHRISTOFLE FOUR PIECE SILVERPLATED "GALLIA" TEA/COFFEE SERVICE, MARKED, 1937-1983, each with a domed lid trimmed in continuous short vertical reeding and centering a starburst panel with a compressed bun finial, on a baluster form body and flanked by a spout opposite a shaped ear form carved hardwood handle with lined disc mount, raised on a conforming foot with matching trim, verso stamped with the French Coq above "GALLIA / FRANCE," over squared stamp "O C," flanking a Chess Knight's horse head above "PROD. / CHRISTOFLE," comprising a coffeepot with hinged lid, height: 9"; a teapot with hinged lid, height: 7 3/4"; a two silverplate handled sugar bowl with removable lid, height: 6"; and a cream pitcher, height: 4 1/2". Note: Gallia refers to a new metal alloy that the second generation of the Christofle family business trademarked. They discovered that this new metal was comparable to pewter but was less expensive to make and plate, was more diuturnal, and was perfect for the demands of manufacturing. Their creation of the Gallia line of metal started yet another market of high caliber table decorations and flatwares at reasonable prices. The French Coq over GALLIA stamped mark has been used since 1937. The squared O (Orfèvrerie) and C (Christofle) flanking the Chess Knight's horse head is a quality mark used since 1935 and was ended in 1985. A ROCOCO REVIVAL MARBLE TOPPED GILTWOOD CENTER TABLE, POSSIBLY ITALIAN, LATE 19TH CENTURY, in the Régence taste with a rectangular variegated pink marble top within a cavetto border, above a serpentine frieze centering a blossoming stem flanked by split floral leafy stems and scrolling acanthus in relief, raised on cabriole legs with long haired maiden mask detailed hips and ending as acanthine paw feet, joined by a stylized "X" form stretcher with central curling tipped leaves urn form finial enclosing a later stained wood demi-sphere. Height: 18" Diameter: 17 3/4" Note: Philip (1907-1987) and Kelvin (b. 1937) LaVerne, a remarkable father and son team whose talented work might be defined as artisan furniture yet this does not seem appropriate for the fine quality and originality of design, materials, and construction found in each of their tables, cabinets, and pedestals. Their use of bronze with various patinations, textures, and applications resulted from years of experimentation including burying bronze slabs in certain treated soils for lengthy periods. The "Après Picasso" side table offered here exhibits many of their talents successfully combined in a veritable sculptural ode to Picasso.
