Harry Powell for James Powell and Sons, Whitefriars, an Arts and Crafts glass flower vase, circa 1885, plain waisted cylindrical form, polished pontil, 16cm highNote: in the tradition of Gertrude Jekyll's Munstead flower glasses, the Whitefriars glassworks continued to embrace the Ruskin and Morris philosophy of simplicity and function above ornamentation, in the late 19th century, pioneering the production of utilitarian yet decorative vases which would accentuate rather than compete with the aesthetics of the contents. Philip Webb and T G Jackson's table glass of the 1860s and 70s paved the way for this style of domestic glass. The vase shape is also seen in smaller ribbed drinking glasses and as vases for the King of Siam dinner service and the motto engraved vases, cf. Evans, W. et al. 1995, Whitefriars Glass, London: Museum of London, p.80 fig.80; See Jackson, L. 1996, Whitefriars Glass, Richard Dennis, p.109 pl.49 for similar examples of this design pattern 910.
