AN INTERESTING CONTINENTAL OAK REFECTORY TABLE, EARLY-MID 17TH C with substantial one plank top, the frieze and two drawers carved with roundels and subsidiary designs of birds and masks, a central upright to either side with the naively carved figure of a horseman, on bobbin turned legs with scratch moulded stretchers and bun feet, the iron locks and handles original, 83cm h; 67 x 244cm++Part of one of the drawer boards replaced. On the top towards one end an approx 3 inch square let in repair. On the underside of the top at one end a small rectangular let in repair. Underneath two later wooden battens inserted but in altogether very good original state with some localised worm and paint splashed. The strapwork design is likely to have been inspired by a printed source, for example the Dutch renaissance architect Hans Vredeman de Vries' Variae Architecturae Formae.++Both folding leaves of the top thought to be original. The hinges apparently original, the screws probably not. The lower leaf originally locking, the lock missing and replaced by a wooden block.
