A 19TH CENTURY DOUBLE FRONTED DOLLS HOUSE retaining its original painted stonework, the rear elevation comprising four side-hinged glazed doors opening to reveal an internal arrangement of four rooms, three with fitted fireplaces and one with a tin kitchen range, beneath a shallow pitched roof, 103cm high, 98.5cm wide, 55cm deep; together with a quantity of furniture and household effects, including nine dolls (two ladies, two maids and five children - see note below); five dining chairs, a sofa, a console table and a drawing room table all in the French style; a pair of corner what-nots; davenport; games table; four-fold screen; sideboard; canopied bed; dresser; gateleg table; work table; white metal pole screen; white metal purdoneum; pair of circular gilt metal mirrors; tin bath; painted tin hot water can; glass topped faux tortoiseshell table; chest of drawers; pictures and other items. Provenance: By family repute the house was made for Eleanor Crawley (b.1809), the present vendor's great, great grandmother, who lived at Grove House, Hackney, following her marriage to Henry Norris in 1833. It has remained in the same family, passing by direct descent, ever since. Note: According to the memoirs of one former owner the inhabitants consisted of ‘Mr Fair and his wife, Lady Fair, and Elspeth and Tommy and the baby… There was [also] Blockhead the butler… and two anonymous maids’.
