A George IV mahogany 'Imperial' dining table by Gillows, with telescopic action, on ten reeded tapering legs with brass castors, with seven boards, 73cm h; 180 x 484cm Gillows' Imperial table is a refinement of the firm's Patent dining table of 1804. It was aesthetically more pleasing and also economical in that the fine Spanish timber of which it was constructed had only rounded corners instead of the more familiar D-shaped ends. Another example of c1825 that is stamped GILLOWS. LANCASTER is illustrated Stuart (Susan E) - Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, plate 242. It too has ten legs and seven finely figured leaves or 'boards', characteristic deep frieze of similar figure and the exact form of telescopic action as the present table Condition ReportOf the superb timber and workmanship associated with Gillows; top extended by about 6 inches (all sides) at time of manufacture. Top repolished by T.S.H Brown of Stoke on Trent in 2008 (copy invoice available).
