The three hardwood supports that connect the table top to the centre turned column have all been reglued at some point. They are structurally sound but glue is clearly visible. The turned centre column is in good condition as are the three legs. There is a screw repair between two of the legs at the foot of the base which has been badly filled.

Lot 1334

An early Victorian mahogany dining table, with telescopic action, complete with leaves and raised on turned tapered legs terminating in castors. Width 60 ins, length extended 149 ins (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This table has come to us from a local hotel. It has been well used and is a little tired. The leaves are original and flat. The top however would in an ideal world need repolishing. It seems to have a varnish type finish which is beginning to desiccate in places. The timber is however of good quality and all of the leaves are basically the same colour. There is no significant damage to the table top. There is a small loss to one leaf where the female dowel attaches this is approximately 1 cm square and is visible. On the middle leave there is a small 3 ins hairline crack running from one side into the leaf, again this is not particularly significant. The third leaf has an old repair in the same place where the female end dowel sits. This is a slightly different colour. The table in the main has its original clip holders but we do not have clips. The table has been later fitted with butterfly action hinges to hold the leaves together. The undercarriage is generally solid and strong. The frieze around the corners to one side of the table is beginning to show stress fractures around the mortise and tenon joints but this is only really visible on one end. All legs are structurally solid and original. All castors are original and present although one or two are loose. The table has the makings of a good piece of furniture but requires some restoration.

The frieze is in generally good order. There is a small triangular patch to the left hand side by the top of the leg. The rear left hand leg has had an old repair. This is barely visible except from the rear where a dowel mark is visible. The other three legs are in good order.

The main problem with it is that the light fitting is detached from the hand. This would require repair. The fingers to the outstretched left hand are broken at the knuckle. The right hand facing out stretched arm has an old repair just above the elbow, this is old but visible. The original surface finish to the figure is showing signs of deterioration in places which should be visible from our image. CONDITION REPORT: Height 29.5 ins, width 30.5 ins, depth 20.5 ins. The top of the side table is generally flat with no significant losses. There is some minor lifting of the veneer in places but as the veneer is thick we do not feel that this is a significant issue. There is an old stress crack running across the centre panel from left to right but again this is an old crack which does not appear to be worsening. The moulded edge is in generally good order as is the frieze. All legs are in generally good condition with only minor surface scuffs and scratches. The low stretcher is in generally good order but has probably had some veneer repairs over the years. The bun feet are quite badly scuffed and do have some cracks but they are solid and presentable.

The joins in the timber are open and there is a patched repair to the centre right hand side of the top. The frieze drawers operate as they should, but are very dirty inside. The table base is scuffed, knocked and marked and very worn at the end stretchers. This is however part of the appeal. The table has been in a damp environment and the top is in the process of drying out.
