Lot 770

A good mid-18th century George II period mahogany architect's table; the hinged rising top with re-entrant corners and ratchet mechanism and 'pushout' bookrest to the front with pull-out circular candle stands flanking, the pull-out front compartmentalised drawer section with hinged quadrant-shaped stationery compartment opening to the right-hand side, raised on square section chamfered Marlborough-style legs concealing recessed brass castors, the sides with original brass swan-neck handles (91cm wide x 60cm deep x 75.5cm high)This has come privately from a local Solicitor’s office.  As far as we are aware there are no keys with the item.  It looks as though there may have been some “strengthening” to the underside of the top flap including butterfly shaped hinges etc., see several images.  The brass catch on the back is spring loaded and appears to work.  There is some minor splitting to the insides of the piece when the top is lifted (see images).  It is noted that the front right leg does not locate flush with the receptacle leg and is bowing slightly outwards.  The top of the piece appears to be darker at the back than the front.  Pulling the slide forward it is obviously compartmentalised and there is a very small, almost a “secret” drawer to the lefty hand section.  The lock appears to be good and original and the whole of the piece appears to be very dusty and dirty overall.  Some of the boards are parting inside the drawer lining at the bottom and there is a small hole at the back.  General scuffs and marks mostly around the bottom of the legs as expected commensurate with age.  The colour is quite nice around cleating near the re-entrant corners.  In the Auctioneer’s opinion it is not without faults but is mostly original and could do with sympathetic restoration.
