Lot 119

Circle of John E. Ferneley, Senior,  British 1782-1860- Portrait of a young man, seated three-quarter length, in a landscape, holding an open book in his left hand; oil on canvas, 53.5 x 47.6 cm. Provenance:  Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 26 October 1990, lot 212.  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present portrait is a particularly charming work, with the sitter leaning on a table, smartly dressed in a suit with a pristine white collar, and engaged in the decidedly intellectual pursuit of reading, situated somewhat improbably in a presumably muddy woodland setting. It is very much reminiscent of portraits by John Ferneley Senior who studied under the sporting artist Benjamin Marshall (1768-1835) and who counted amongst his patrons some of the most prominent and fashionable society figures of the time, including Beau Brummell (1778-1840) and the Comte d'Orsay (1748-1809).

Lot 276

Emeric Kelen,  Hungarian 1896-1978- Indian Round-Table Conference 1930; hand coloured lithographs, each signed and inscribed 'Kelen' or 'Kelen / London' within the plate, each variously titled within the plate, the title page inscribed 'For Kind acceptance of Her Excellency / Lady Willingdon / CI CBE / From sincere friend / Nizam of Hyderabad VII / 1931' (upper edge), each 38.4 x 27.9 cm., fifty-two (52)., (unframed, in folio). ARR. Provenance:  The Collection of Lady Willingdon (1875-1960).  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present work was a gift to Lady Willingdon from Mir Osman Ali Khan (1886-1967), the 7th Nizam of Hyderabad State, and the last ruling monarch before annexation, by India, in September 1948 through a military operation code named Operation Polo. Marie Freeman-Thomas, Lady Willingdon, was married to Freeman Freeman-Thomas, 1st Marquess of Willingdon (1866-1941), who served as the Governor-General of Canada (1926-1931) and Viceroy of India (1931-1936).  Kelen produced caricatures and cartoons of political figures in inter-war Europe of the 1920s and 1930s, often collaborating with Alois Derso (1888-1964), whom he met in 1922. He was particularly well-known for his depictions of conferences, including the 1925 Locarno Conference, the 1932 World Disarmament Conference, the 1933 London Economic Conference, and the ongoing conferences of the League of Nations. He also produced cartoons of the participants of the three Round Table Conferences held in 1930-1932, a series of peace conferences organised by the British Government and Indian political figures to discuss constitutional reforms in India, and it is from one of these that the present set of caricatures originates.

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian / British 1869-1937- Portrait of Mrs Frederick John Nettlefold, known as The South African Nightingale; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'de László / 1931' (lower left), 100.7 x 75 cm. Provenance:  By descent in the family of the sitter.  Private Collection, UK.  Literature:  DLA078-0094, letter from de László to F J Nettlefold, 18 July 1929.  DLA078-0090, letter from F J Nettlefold to de László, 25 October 1929.  DLA078-0078, letter from FJ Nettlefold to de László, 16 June 1931.  NPG Album 1931, f. 23: Mrs. F.J. Nettlefold.  László, Philip de,1931 diary (private collection).  The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no.10330. Note:  Frederick Nettlefold contacted de László in July 1929 after attending his exhibition at the French Gallery in London. He had particularly admired the dramatic portrait of the Marchioness of Milford Haven, née Countess Nadejda de Torby [de László Archive Trust catalogue no.3491] who had been painted in a dynamic pose with one bare shoulder, and wished his wife to be painted in a similar manner (DLA078-0094, op cit.). Mrs Nettlefold was an opera singer who performed under the name Vera de Villiers. Owing to the busy schedules of both artist and sitter it was difficult to find mutually convenient times for the portrait to be completed. The artist recorded in his diary on 1 and 3 April 1931 that he was making preparatory studies, however a preparatory drawing in the collection of a descendent is inscribed '1930 / XII' [111633]. De László began painting in oil on 4 April when he described the sitter as ‘rather rough in appearance…but a great feminine charm about her.’ (László, Philip de, 1931 diary, 4 April entry, op. cit.). The sitter was pregnant at the time of sitting which influenced the composition of the portrait with her hands resting on the table in front of her. According to the artist’s diary there were six further sittings (László, Philip de, 1931 diary, 5, 8, 9, 10, 23, and 25 April entries and 1 May entry, op. cit.). The portrait must have been completed in mid-May as de László wrote to the sitter on 19 May that the paint was not yet dry enough for it to be sent to Paris to be included in his exhibition at the Charpentier Gallery (DLA078-0090, op. cit.). The letter also notes that the picture was framed and glazed by Emile Remy and photographed by Paul Laib [no.5994]. The honorarium for the portrait was £840 and this was paid on 16 June 1931 nearly two years after it was commissioned (DLA078-0078, op cit., The equivalent of approximately £38,500 in 2023). The sitter's maiden name was Johanna Véronique Graaff and she was born on 26 September 1891 in South Africa, the daughter of Sir Jacobus Arnoldus Combrinck Graaff (1863-1927) and his wife Susan Theunissen (1881-1952). Graff was a member of the Senate of the Union of South Africa (1910-1927). She married her first husband Dr Pieter Michiel Daneel at an unknown date. As Vera de Villiers, the sitter gained international recognition as a contralto opera singer and performed throughout Britain. In 1925 she married her second husband Frederick John Nettlefold (1867-1949), actor manager and member of the Nettlefold industrial family, in 1925. There were three children of the marriage, Mary (born 1926), Frederick (born 1927) and Dorothy (born 1931). They were divorced in 1945 and she married Albert Coates (1881-1953), English orchestral conductor and composer. The couple moved to South Africa and formed a pioneering opera group there. The sitter was singer director until her husband’s death in 1953. She survived him by twenty years, dying in 1973 and is buried in Cape Town. She is here shown seated half-length, slightly to the left, head turned slightly right and looking to the viewer. She wears a blue and gold brocade stole with cream edge over evening dress, holding a string of green beads in both hands resting on a wooden table in front of her. We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this portrait, which will be included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com (no.10330).

Lot 294

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA,  Hungarian / British 1869-1937- Portrait of Paul Leonardo de László, the artist's son; oil on canvas, signed, inscribed, and dated 'To Stephen / de László / 1932' (lower left), 77.8 x 62.2 cm. Provenance:  Stephen de László, son of the artist.  By descent;  Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 12 December 2013, lot 27.  Private Collection, Spain. Literature:  The de László Archive Trust, 'The Catalogue Raisonné of Works by Philip de László (1869-1937) [online]', no.8354. Note:  Paul Leonardo de László (1906-1982) was born in Vienna, the third son of Philip de László and his wife Lucy, née Guinness. His second Christian name was given to him in honour of Leonardo da Vinci, (1452-1519) whom his father much admired. The family moved to England in 1907 and Paul was educated at Twyford School, near Winchester, Rugby (where he was known for his debating skills) and Balliol College, Oxford. At Oxford he was a keen boxer, and very much involved in the Oxford Union Debating Society. After graduating from Oxford he taught history at Eton for a term, and was asked to join the permanent staff.  He declined the offer and spent a year (1927-1928) in New York working in the bank of Ladenburg Thalmann & Co. Inc. Philip de László was extremely proud when his son was called to the bar in 1929 and painted a number of portraits of him in his wig and gown. The sitter joined solicitors Gregory Rowcliffe & Co. in London, who would later act as executors of Philip de László’s estate after his death in 1937. In June 1933 Paul married Josephine Vavasour McConnell. They had three children, Christopher (born 1936), Ann (born 1938) and Jane (born 1942) and lived in Tite Street and later, Southcote Lodge, Camberley. During the war Paul served as a Lieutenant Commander Royal Naval Volunteer based at Bletchley Park. He served in North Africa, inspected Naval Radio stations and worked in the special section of the Admiralty. He was awarded an OBE. He was a close friend of General Montgomery’s Chief of Staff, Freddie de Guingand. After the war he joined 'English Electric' as personal assistant and legal advisor to the chairman, Sir George Nelson. He became a director of the company. He retired in 1969. His interests included photography, cine-photography, woodwork, clocks and watches, and natural history. During his schooldays he knew Harry Abrahams and they shared a job collecting films to be developed. At the age of 14 he became a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. He took many of the photographs in John Ramsbottom’s book 'Mushrooms and Toadstools'. A keen amateur conjurer, he was very skilled with his hands. During the war, when he was at home and had the time, he taught carpentry to his son Christopher and his contemporaries in his workshop.  He enjoyed designing and building electrical gadgets. Visitors to Orchards, Godalming (where he moved in 1946) were fascinated by the movie screen which was hidden behind the panelling in the hall, and which would appear at the press of a button as the lights dimmed. He took a great interest in his family which included many cousins with whom he remained in touch until he died. He was referred to as 'The Rock of the Family' and took great pleasure in his eight grandchildren. He lived at Orchards until 1974 when he moved to Haslemere, Surrey.  He died in December 1983, twenty two months after his wife Josephine. In this highly engaging portrait study, the sitter is shown half-length, seated and to the left at a table, wearing a barrister's black gown, wing collar and a grey wig. His left elbow rests on the table with his hand raised, his right forearm across a group of papers. The portrait is inscribed to Stephen, the elder brother of the sitter. We are grateful to Katherine Field for writing the catalogue entry for this portrait, which is included in the Philip de László catalogue raisonné, currently presented in progress online: www.delaszlocatalogueraisonne.com (no.8354).

Lot 49

After Frans van Mieris,  Dutch 1635-1681- A woman standing before a mirror; oil on panel, 33.4 x 27.6 cm. (unframed). Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present work appears to be a copy, in reverse, after Van Mieris's original, which is held in the Leiden Collection [FM-121]. The theme of a lady at her toilette is one that often featured in the paintings of Van Mieris and his contemporaries, such as Gerard ter Borch (1617-1681) and Gabriel Metsu 1629-1667). This subject allowed these artists to exhibit their significant technical proficiency, particularly in the depiction of a range of surfaces and fabrics, from the shimmer of satin and pearls to the fur and velvet of the lady's cape, and the weave of the carpet on the table.

Lot 53

Manner of Jan Miense Molenaer,  Dutch, early 19th century- A Cottage interior with a family seated around a table; oil on panel, 44.1 x 55.7 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present work is executed in the manner of the Dutch artist Jan Miense Molenaer (1610-1668), whose output is characterised by his scenes of merry company in an interior. Here, a family group are seated around a table, admiring the plate of meat which seats in the centre, whilst a serving-girl holds a bowl above the table. The only figure who does not appear to be preoccupied with the meal is the mother, seated to the left, who looks directly out at the viewer. The plates and cutlery balance precariously on the edge of the table, very much recalling the tendencies of many 17th-century Dutch still life artists such as Jan Havicksz. Steen (1626-1679).

Lot 56

Manner of David Teniers the Younger,  late 18th / early 19th century- The interior of a tavern with figures; oil on panel, oval, 27.2 x 36.6 cm., (unframed). Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present work is clearly influenced by the approach of David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690), whose tavern scenes, filled with figures drinking, gambling, and smoking pipes, are highly distinctive. This painting depicts figures seated at a table, smoking pipes, whilst a barmaid approaches them from the left of the composition and a standing violinist serenades them.
