Lot 20

Antiquarian. 1772 Junius, Stat Nominis Umbra. Printed for Henry Sampson Woodfall in Pater Noster Row, 1772. Two volumes. Contemporary full calf binding, gilt tooled borders & spine labels. Light rubbing to spines, vol 2 starting at the head of the spine and both volumes with loss to the tails. Ownership bookplate of James Corry Sherrard to front pastedown of both volumes, some offsetting to the first & last leaves of each book. First edition, lacking the reissue's additional table of contents & index. 12mo.  'Junius' was the pseudonym of an outspoken Whig politician who anonymously published letters critical of the government of King George III in the Public Advertiser between 1770 and 1772; his publisher, Sampson Woodfall, was tried for libel as the result of publishing the controversial polemic. Junius' identity has never been confirmed, but some scholars believe that politician Philip Francis was behind the letters.

A vintage 20th century Viners forty-four piece silver plated canteen of cutlery in the Kings Royale design, presented in mahogany and baize lined case. The set containing six table knives, six table forks, two table spoons, six soup spoons, six dessert knives, six dessert forks, six dessert spoons and six teaspoons. Canteen measures approx. 11cm x 48cm x 31cm.
