Elgin - a 26 piece harlequin set of Victorian Scottish Provincial silver flatware, comprising eleven 'Fiddle' pattern table forks, maker's mark indistinct, London 1850, tandem marked by William Ferguson of Elgin, monogrammed, six 'Fiddle and Shell' pattern dessert forks, four of which maker's mark indistinct, London 1850, tandem marked by William Ferguson of Elgin, the remaining two by Robert Gray & Son, Glasgow 1887, tandem marked by William Ferguson of Elgin, monogrammed, and nine teaspoons, 'Fiddle' pattern by William Ferguson marked for Elgin and Edinburgh1841, monogrammed, 41.9ozt gross (26) Other Notes: There are several theories as to why some silverware has two maker's marks. One is that makers going out of business sold their stock, and tandem marking took place by the new 'owner' - another is that items made by a reputable maker were tandem marked to give the 'new' marker some credibility as to the quality of his goods. Another theory is that retailers struck their mark on already hallmarked pieces to identify the goods they sold, and of course there could have been collaboration with two makers on the one piece and both wanted recognition…nobody knows for sure.

James Steuart Shanks was born in 1824 and in 1845 received a large inheritance on the death of his uncle. In 1851 in London, he met with Henrik Konrad Bolin. At that time both Bolin and Fabergé were jewellers to the royal court. In 1852, Bolin moved to Moscow where, with Shanks, they founded 'Shanks & Bolin, Magasin Anglais'. It was described as an outfitters in the style of Liberty of London, and the partners aimed their new shop at Moscow's newly emerging middle classes. In 1886, Shanks' cousin Allan Bowe, met Carl Fabergé and in 1887 he went into partnership with him - setting up the Fabergé shop across the road from Shanks. Shanks' business would have had close relations with Fabergé's business once Allan was managing the local Fabergé shop and at its height Shanks was competing directly with Fabergé to supply the aristocracy and new rich of Moscow. Bolin died in 1888 and the company partnership came to an end, with Shanks continuing the business under the name of Shanks & Co.

Lot 19

A 17th century Dutch metalwares brandy bowl, maker's mark not traced, Groningen 1667/1668, of oval lobed form heavily decorated with repoussé foliage with an alliance armorial to the side, applied cast dragon mask flying scroll handles and raised on a lobed pedestal foot, engraved underneath 'Swaentien / Dema 1667', 9.8ozt Other Notes: Two-handled silver bowls were used at festive occasions, and brandewijn, a liquor distilled from wine to which sugar and raisins were added, was served from them with a spoon. Brandy bowls were made mainly along the Dutch Wadden Sea; the northern Dutch provinces of Friesland and Groningen, and in parts of northern Germany. The most sought after are the Groningen bowls with vertical handles and the Frisian bowls with horizontal handles. In the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries they were usually octagonal with hand chased decorative or biblical scenes. During the seventeenth century the oval shaped bowl became popular; lobed and often decorated with chased and engraved floral and geometrical bands, leafy tendrils and symbols. The handles were usually cast and applied separately. The presence of alliance crests (two family crests side by side) on brandy bowls and spoons suggests that they also functioned as a wedding gift. They would be filled and left on the table at the wedding feast so that guests could toast the happy couple. This theory is reinforced on this example with an alliance crest to the side together with the engraving on the underside of the foot, which may be the couple's Christian names and the wedding date.

Lot 358

A single stone old cut diamond ring, the plain shank swelling at the front and cast into a sunburst of raised rays, the tips of which form claws to hold the old cushion cut diamond, yellow metal stamped '18ct', size N; estimated weight of diamond approximately 0.50cts The ring is in good condition for its age with appropriate scuffs and wear but nothing material.  The diamond is secure though several of the claws are at their extremity; the metal tests for 18ct gold.  The setting makes assessment of the diamond extremely difficult:  the colour is approximately J/K; there are some chips, nibbles or naturals around the girdle, and a small table nick, and loupe-visible abrasion, but internally the stone looks clean, probably VS.
