Screws of various later date have been used to secure them and the iron stretchers. It is not possible to provide the weight. The top alone requires atleast two very capable and experienced people to lift if not four people for the sake of safety. The top and base elements probably associated to each other. The design of the iron stretchers suggests a possible Spanish origin although they appear likely to be 19th or 20th century in date. The stretchers applied to the tops of the walnut base sections of the table appear 19th or 20th century in date and some later nails have been used to secure these elements. Some old evidence of worm damage. This appears to be to a minor extent to the base elements. The top bear some worm damage and some filler has been used to disguise some areas of loss. The Grand Tour in the late 18th century was the single most influential factor on the English gentleman's collecting taste and education. As with the table offered from Mere Hall (referred to above), it seems highly possible that the buyer of the Italian specimen marble top would consult a firm such as Gillows in regard to making a suitable table as a base. Condition Report: Well executed old repair to crack through the centre of the marble top. Metal metal bracing has been applied to the underside to help secure and filler has been applied to the sides and top to help disguised - see images. Lot 344

A Louis XVI giltwood and marble topped demi lune console table, circa 1785, in the manner of George Jacob or Johann Friedrich Funk II, 87cm high, 141cm wide, 55.5cm deep For a closely related example of table see, Christie's, New York, 9th October 2013, The Art of Collecting: Three Private Collections, Lot 725 ($9,375). Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits and some old repairs. some small losses. Various wear and old loss to gilding. Evidence of later re-gilding / refreshing of gilding in areas throughout. Very little sign of old worm damage. A very small number of holes are visible. Other areas of old worm holes may possibly have been covered by filler, painting or gilding. In the photograph of the table, the top appears to rise slightly away from the top of the table. This is due to the fact that there is an old repaired clean break to the marble on that side of the table and the way it has been repaired has caused it to rise slightly. Under the base framework (i.e. the element supporting the urn) there are two applied strips of timber to secure joints. These appear to be original or atleast of significant age. There are no signs of any additional floral swags being in position to the rear stretchers of the base. The table stands level on the floor but as the table is of significant age and the marble has been repaired it may not sit truly perfectly due to minor movement in the timber or joints over time. The legs are solid/ secure in their joints. There is some slight movement/ slightly mishapen element to each leg due to age and weight on them and being hand turned/ carved. There are no makers marks visible. Please refer to the additional images if required for visual reference to condition.   Condition Report Disclaimer
