A MATCHED PAIR OF MAHOGANY TRIPOD TABLES OR CANDLESTANDS CIRCA 1760 AND LATER 58cm high, 45cm diameter Condition Report: Old marks, scratches and abrasions, some old chips and splits comensurate with age and use Some minor old repairs comensurate with age and use. No old breaks to legs or stems detected. The dating of the cataloguing being stated as 'circa 1760 and later' is as a result of the following observations below: However overall, the dating indicates that the tables do not appear to be a pure and original pair overall. One of the tops appears to be of later date than the stem/ base it is on and therefore also later in date than the other table overall. The cut/ grain of the top also varies from the other (see images) The shaping and size of the tops are very similar and almost identical to eachother but there is some minor variation on close comparison. The overall diameter of what is likely the one later top is slightly smaller than the other top by approximately 1cm in total. The turned 'blocks' (that accept the tops of the stems) to the underside of the tops vary from eachother (please see images) suggesting the block beneath the later top is of the same date as the top it is secured to. The tops of both stems are glued into the blocks. The finishing to the underside of the legs and bases vary from eachother. This may possibly atleast in part be due to how they have been treated/ restored. There is some other variation between the finishing and colour of the surfaces and carving when elements are closely inspected right next to eachother. (see images) The table stem and legs of the table that appears to have its original top, appears to have a higher concentration of old marks and abrasions overall. It is not possibly to conclude for certain however, it seems possible that one of the tables is an incredibly well executed copy of the other, the surface and colour is good and appears to have age. It is perhaps a copy 'out of period' where it may have been carved just out of period or in the 19th century. The tables are of polished appearance, The tops in particular are cleaned and polished. There is no specific additional provenance for this lot. Please refer to all additional images for visual reference to conditionCondition Report Disclaimer

A REGENCY MAHOGANY AND GILT BRONZE MOUNTED SIDE TABLE ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE OAKLEY, CIRCA 1810 93cm high, 252cm wide, 76.5cm deep This fine table can be attributed to George Oakley (d.1840), who worked in partnership with various cabinet-makers including Henry Kettle, George Shackleton and John Evans, producing high quality furniture in the fashionable Grecian taste and specializing in 'buhl' inlay (C. Gilbert and G. Beard, eds., Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, 1986, pp.658-660). His extensive enterprise earned the accolades of the Royal Family as noted after their visit in 1799: 'the Royal family, with the Prince and Princess of Orange did Mr. Oakley the honour of viewing his Printed Furniture Warehouse in New Bond Street; when her Majesty, the Duke and Duchess of York, and the Princesses highly approved of the splendid variety which has justly attracted the notice of the fashionable world' (Morning Chronicle). This reputation spread abroad where an 1804 newspaper article published in Weimar, Germany stated: 'all people with taste buy their furniture at Oakley's'. A sideboard and side table attributed to his firm, and of the same design, are in the Ballroom of the Mansion house, described as a 'capital mahogany sideboard supported on a stand, reeded legs and carved and bronzed paw feet, with antique bronze heads'.An almost identical table is in Royal Dining Room, Palace of Holyroodhouse.
