An ebony and calamander occasional table, Galle district, Sri Lanka, second quarter 19th century, with a hexagonal toph.77cm;w.47cmThis table differs from that of the original design by Thomas King, as illustrated in his book - 'The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified', published in 1829, fig. 68 (see illustration)- in that it lacks the material pouch and has an inlaid top. This style of inlay featuring specimen woods is a characteristic feature of furniture from the Galle district.
