Lot 782

An antique diamond and sapphire plaque ring, featuring an inky blue cabochon sapphire to the centre, surrounded by an oval plaque inlaid with round, brilliant cut diamonds. Ring size J.Condition report: The sapphire measures 11 x 6.5mm. approx. The top of the sapphire has some miniscule pits and tiny scratches to the surface – these are visible to the naked eye as a very slight ‘matting’ to the shine on the top of the cabochon. There is also one larger (approx. 1.5mm) old surface scratch to the sapphire just off the top to one side – it is not particularly deep and is old so the edges are worn, but it can just about be felt with a fingernail. With a light shone from underneath the stone, some clear natural dark & light contrasting striations can be seen low down on one side just above the setting, along with a patch of silvery inclusions – this patch of inclusions are also visible from underneath with a light shone through the top of the stone. When worn, these inclusions are not visible. The diamonds all appear to be original – one of the larger side ones at one end has a small chip to the girdle (which is beneath a claw and was therefore presumably caused pre-mounting). That same stone also has two small chips to the edge of the table – one is very sharp and may in fact be an inaccurate cut from during the cutting. Our approximation is that the diamonds weigh approx. 0.5ct total. The millegrain setting is in good condition, with some wear as expected at either end. On the shoulders, one of the central ‘leaf’ pieces stretching from the millegrain edge to the shoulder has been off and has been reattached with tiny spots of clear glue). It seems secure but obviously it would be preferable to have a soldered repair. The shank does not appear to have been sized. There are no hallmarks. The metal tests as platinum of an electronic tester. We believe that the ring dates from the 1930s.

Lot 823

An 18ct white gold and ruby line bracelet, the rubies totalling approximately 19ct, of deep red to purple colour and accompanied by an International Gemmological Institute certificate.* Condition: In very good condition overall. The metal is in very good condition, with no faults and the clasp is working well. The rubies have some variance in colour but it is subtle and not particularly noticeable when on the wrist.
