A Friendly Gesture: A Circa 1780's Mother-of-Pearl Fan, with sticks in the form known as ''battoire''. This monture is most heavily carved and gilded, with elaborate piercing to the gorge. Carved ovals of various sizes have been combined to present various male figures in 18th century dress, together with background lattice work and floral detail. The double paper leaf, presented in quite autumnal colours, in particular dark green, shows a couple and their son outside in the garden next to a simple table covered in a white cloth. They are joined by another man carrying a tall silver lidded tankard, presumably wishing to share a beverage with his friends. The lady in pink, her arm around her husband's shoulders, pushes an empty glass towards the new arrival. All are attired quite formally in 18th century dress, the men in long jackets and breeches, waistcoats and sashes, the boy in red. To the left, a lady plays outside with perhaps the same child, certainly wearing red, his mother this time dressed in blue. To the right, the child has changed to red breeches and a brown jacket with green waistcoat, the lady to blue and mauve and possibly doing some embroidery. The leaf is bordered in dark green, relieved in the reserves with garlands and groups of colourful flowers. Four classical oval vignettes, however, painted in near black, bring back some of the more formal feel to the leaf. The verso is lightened to the sides with large colourful flowers. To the centre, a lone gentleman has crossed water to an island and, next to some ruins, he raises his gun at birds flying overhead. Guard length 26cm. Together with an 18th century fabric covered boxthe monture has been damaged with obvious losses to three sticks. The guard is broken. Losses to the sequins. The gilding is now quite dull, and there are definite losses in particular to the lower guard. Another gorge stick has been repaired with a panel seen from the verso.
A Circa 1760 to 1770's Bone Fan, with double paper leaf, mounted on pierced and carved sticks, a vase and flowers painted on the guard and a simple painted flower spray sweeping across the gorge. The leaf is découpé, along the top border and a section of the sides, with quite intricate flowers and foliage. The centre of the leaf depicts an Oriental lady wearing pink robes and a child wearing blue robes, beside a table on which is placed a vase. The lady carries a fan. The leaf also depicts shells and sea vegetation, and a fish or dolphin. The verso is plain. Guard length 29cmDamage to the découpage mainly to the right of centre, some soiling to the leaf, and nicks to the folds.
A Small and Slender Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, the guards painted in several colours with figures and fruit and perhaps a frog. The gorge is also painted, and pierced, a central scene of a large plant pot with a cactus and a coral plant, several figures around, further figures to each side, a band of tiny painted flowers beneath. The double paper leaf shows an important visitor wearing long trailing robes and carrying a fan, and the preparations for the visit, with a table being set with crockery and various figures arriving with baskets and household objects. The verso shows a distant mountain range, a stylised tree, and a fisherman. Guard length 25.5cmThe verso is slightly browning and has a paper repair to the top left.
The Birth Of Jesus: A Rare 18th Century Dutch Bone Fan, the monture very simply gilded and pierced. The double paper leaf depicts three biblical scenes. To the left, Abraham bringing refreshments to three men seated at his table, these being angels. To the centre, Jesus at the well with the woman of Samaria, and to the right, Jacob in conflict with an angel. The verso is painted in soft blue with stone tablets which record the ten commandments, see Exodus 23, 20-24, 18. The text is in Old Dutch and is the beginning of the message of the angel of the Lord to the shepherds in the field, announcing the birth of Jesus. Lucas 2, 1-20. Above, the symbols of The Trinity, the eye contained within the triangle. Guard length 24cm Translation of the Dutch text kindly supplied to the previous owner by Drs F Hovinga Van Eijsden, the current President of the Fan Circle International. The gilding is dull, and missing in places. The two central sticks in the gorge are not original. The centre of the leaf above those sticks has been damaged and shortened, thus the bottom left corner of the script in Dutch on the verso is missing. There are other areas of the leaf which are either stained or have had restoration, best viewed from the verso.
As The Hours Pass: A Highly Unusual Mid to Late 18th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the heavy sticks carved, pierced and gilded, the upper guards wide and each containing a portrait within an oval, covered with glass. The gorge sticks are shaped and several contain figures. The double vellum leaf is divided on the recto into sections, the central section quite slim, painted with a youth playing a pipe, above which is an oval containing a portrait of a lady, covered with mica. To the right, a homely scene of a lady at rest seated on a chair with her feet on a footstool, reading, a serious looking young boy in front of the fireplace, being observed by a white cat. On the wall is an embossed foil panel containing a clock, time set at ten to midday. To the left, a lady dozing in her chair, ignoring perhaps the gentleman attempting to serenade her leaning in through the window. A similar clock is above her side table. The reserves are set with a foil urn and flowers, and embroidered with gold sequins. The verso is painted with a rather crude countryside scene, to the left a man looking out from a building wearing a rather unusual hat, a lady with similar headwear plus a veil to the right, some colourful ducks on a riverbank to the fore. Guard length 24cmSome rubbing to the leaf, some patching to areas seen from the verso.
The Alchemist: A Circa 1700 or Perhaps Earlier, possibly Dutch, (looking at the seated man's hat) Slender Ivory Fan, painted in rich colours to the guards and gorge, with simple rural scenes and decorative designs highlighted in gold. The colourful double paper leaf shows an exterior scene, a man in black priest's robes and large hat, (a Jesuit?) reading from a book, in front of a table where objects, seemingly of metal, are being weighed on scales. To the left, a worker with a very large pestle and mortar. To the right, a worker sieves something into a black powder next to a metal apparatus over a flame, the latter being fanned with bellows by a man in Chinese robes, the final product flowing into black bottles through a tube. Turning base metal into gold? Making gunpowder, a bi-product of some Chinese experiments? The verso has a simple spray of painted flowers, in deep pink and yellows, roses and a tulip, with foliage. Guard length 25.5cm Issue 92 of The Bulletin produced for members by the Fan Circle International carries an article, on pages 27 to 28, of an opinion on this fan by Mrs Hélène Alexander, MBE, FRSA, of the Fan Museum on Greenwich who viewed the fan during an exhibition of some of the collection in 2010The monture paint is rubbed in places. The leaf folds are rubbed and to the right, bottom border, a small section has lifted but is present. The first stick in from the left is stuck to the guard.
A Circa 1810 to 1830 Bone Fan, with a double paper leaf, and very unusual overlapping gorge sticks, forming hearts. The guards are overlaid with a greyish mother-of-pearl. The leaf depicts, to the right, three people taking refreshments, a throne to the right, a man seated wearing robes and a feathered turban. A second male is wearing a cloak. To the left, a man in doublet and hose is laid out on a garden bench, a lady in a red robe and intricate hair ornament attending. In the centre, a large table where a group of people are taking refreshments, the women in colourful dresses, the men in doublet and hose. The verso appears stipple printed, with roses to each side, and a wealthy couple in Regency costume taking a stroll and examining the wares of a roadside flower seller. The unusual pierced gorge sticks are arranged in pairs, with gold highlights, and are equally of interest when the fan is closed and laid on its side. Guard length 23cmLoss of some Mother of pearl to the upper guard. Repairs to the leaf on the verso, most folds.
A Circa 1820's to 1830's Fan, with'' jewelled'' metal guards, the guards of a gilded metal, the gorge sticks pierced and of a slightly more ''rose gold'' colour. Both guards are inlaid with red paste stones, the upper guard with a white on black cameo of a soldier's head, the lower guard having a white on coral colour cameo with a woman's head. The double paper leaf has a central scene of two couples and a winged cherub, the latter holding a garland of flowers. To the right, a young couple in the dress of the period, the lady in pink, the gentleman wearing a top hat and jacket with waistcoat and holding eye glasses on a chain. A monkey, holding a flower garland, is perched on a dressing table to the side of the lady. To the left, a couple dressed in medieval garb, the man in armour and holding a spear, which bears a message ''Conde ...''. The outer reserves of the leaf are heavily gilded. The verso depicts a tropical location, with lush vegetation, a lady wearing a sari, seated centrally, shaded by a fringed parasol held by an attendant, a man in European dress wearing a top hat to her right, and a young black boy seated at her feet. The reserves are heavily decorated in gold. Guard length 26cmThe leaf is slightly rubbed and has some small tears to the paper, and si gns of previous restoration where the gorge sticks meet the leaf. Good strong colours.
Birds and Butterflies: A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with slender sticks, the upper section of the guards wider and carved with a flower. The gorge is both painted and pierced, the piercing simple with leaves and curves, a shaped lozenge painted centrally edged in gold and containing tiny brown leaves and delicate blue flowers. Nearer to the head, the gorge sticks are painted in blues and pinks with an Oriental lady and child, a butterfly hovering over lilac and pink flowers. The double paper leaf is fresh and bright and highlighted in gold. An Oriental child wearing pink and blue approaches a man, a lantern hung from a pole over his shoulder, a bird perched on his outstretched hand. The man in similar dress with the addition of a shaped black hat and black shoes, proffers a flower basket containing pink flowers. Behind him on a small table is an exotic pot plant with large leaves and a blue pottery bowl. Above the figures hovers a bright blue bird, another perched on a branch of a tree to the left. The verso is plain save for a few pink flowers and green leaves. The découpage on the leaf is highly detailed and covers the top border, both sides and provides some central detail. The designs are so intricate as to resemble high quality needle lace with various complex fillings, including pomegranates and leaves as well as lattice and scrolling. Guard length 28cmThe leaf is clean and fresh but does have some brown marking on the verso.
Pastoral Idyll: An Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, with carved guards and a carved, pierced and painted gorge. The front guard has two panels in the upper section in which are painted flowers. The lower guard has a more plainly carved upper section. A central pierced vignette in the gorge is carved with flowers in a basket, a squirrel to either side, the basket brightly gilded. To the left, two painted Japanese figures, a tall bird table with a bird, to the right a further Japanese figure proffering a red rose to an ostrich. The vellum leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, shows a European scene of a lady listening to a musician playing a stringed instrument, and to the right a young shepherd playing a pipe to his sheep. The verso has a simple painting of trees and a sheep. Guard length 29cmThe leaf is quite well rubbed, and foxed within some folds. The ivory is yellowing in places, the verso is quite dusty and lightly marked.
