A 1948 London Olympic aluminium torch designed by Ralph Lavers, the flared bowl pierced in three panels with five Olympic Rings and cast to band below with “XIVTH Olympiad 1948, Olympia to London with Thanks to the Bearer”, with plain turned handle, 16.25ins high, later adapted to form an electric table lamp and with additional aluminium and turned oak tray topped base Provenance : Originally carried by a Marine based at Deal Barracks, Deal, Kent and carried on the route from Dover to Wembley. The torch was subsequently given in payment for a bar bill by the Marine at The Beach Brow Hotel in Deal, the landlady, Nellie Wakefield, and thence by descent to the present vendor Note : This was one of eighty torches carried on the section between Dover and Wembley in 73 stages covering some 255 kilometres
