Africa.- Livingstone (David) Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa, first edition, first issue, folding tinted lithograph frontispiece, engraved portrait, 2 lithographs (one tinted), 20 wood-engraved plates, 1 folding table, 2 folding maps (1 in pocket at end), advertisements dated 'November 1, 1857' at end, scattered faint spotting, first few leaves frayed at fore-edge with one or two short tears, original cloth, rebacked retaining original backstrip, slight bumping to edges, housed in modern cloth drop-back box, [Czech p.97; Hosken p.126], 8vo, 1857.⁂ There is some confusion over which variant is the first edition, first issue. This copy matches the precedence given by Gaston Renard with the lithographs by W. West facing pp.66 and 225.
