18th century AD. Made on a George III halfpenny (1770-1775 issue"). Obv: normal profile bust with GEORGIVS III REX legend. Rev: smoothed and engraved in script 'Success to / the Earl of / Sandwich' in three lines within flower wreath. See S. 3774 for host coin. 8.66 grams. ("). This token could refer to John Montague, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792) who was a prominent statesman holding several political offices including Postmaster General, First Lord of the Admiralty and Secretary of State; it is he who is claimed to have invented the 'sandwich', supposedly during a session of cards, eating meat between slices of bread at the table; alternatively, it might relate to the naval warship HMS Sandwich, of which there have been several, two named for the 1st and 4th Earls (vice admiral and First Lord of the Admiralty respectively"). Very fine.
