A Three-Piece George V Silver and Niello Dressing-Table Service, by Henry George Murphy, London, 1931, With Falcon Studios Mark in the Art Deco style, each piece with niello flowers and foliage, with niello initials 'RA McQ', comprising a hand-mirror; a hair-brush, each with carved ivory finial and a comb-back, teeth lackingthe hand-mirror 25.5cm long (3)Niello is a traditional technique which Murphy himself describes as '... dating back to the 1st century A.D.' (P. Atterbury and J. Benjamin, Arts and Crafts to Art Deco The Jewellery and Silver of H. G. Murphy, Woodbridge, 2005, p. 168), in the working notes for a lecture he presented at Goldsmiths' Hall in 1935. He describes the process in some detail and his receipe in particular as using '3 parts silver, 2 parts copper and 1 part lead. The copper and silver and melted together in a crucible and when properly mixed the lead is added'. Other examples of dressing-table services by Murphy which are decorated with niello are known, for example a six-piece service with very similarly carved ivory finials (op. cit., p. 116). With non-transferable standard ivory exemption declaration number 4L7PDRYK.Each piece fully marked and further struck with Falcon studios mark. The marks are generaly clear. There is some scratching and wear to the marks overall. The bristles on the brush are very worn. The comb is lacking the teeth. The mirror with some minor flaws to the mirror plate. The ivory shows no indication of additions or restoration.

Frank Moss Bennett (1874-1952)Pleading with MasterSigned and dated 1932, oil on canvas, 24.5cm by 36.5cmThere is some spotting to the back of the canvas. All keys are present, but the canvas is slightly slack. A good even picture plane.There has been some drying issues with the paint in the lower part of the painting, particularly the floor, where the upper layers have retracted. This has been suppressed by retouching in places - the overpaint goes over the retractions and against the direction of the original brushstrokes, and is opaque.There are some areas that are a little thin/abraded, particularly the darker passages such as the brown of the table.There is a 1 inch area of damage, restored, to the right of the chair leg with some retouched further flaked losses above this. There are a few areas of rubbing around the rebate, and a scuff in the varnish to the right mantle corbel. There are two unrestored areas of small losses of paint and ground - under the right edge of the basket handle and in the gentleman's hat. These are under the upper varnish so not recent. There is a fairly even, glossy varnish and it is not appreciably yellowed.

The base has some general scuffs and a small area of patching to the veneer. The feet are of later date.

Lot 651

Aime-Gabrielle-Adolphe Bourgoin (1824-1874) French The Love Letter Signed, oil on panel, 39cm by 30.5cm Provenance: Cooling Galleries, London E. Stacy Marks, Ltd. The edges of the panel are covered at the reverse. The panel is flat, and no splits are visible. There are four areas of radiating cracking to paint and ground (two top and two bottom) coinciding with where the nails hold the panel in the frame indicating some slight tension in these areas, but the cracks are not elevated. A few other scattered age cracks, a few in the white skirt slightly elevated but secure. There is a small white loss/abrasion under the rebate bottom right corner. There has been a campaign of retouching, mostly to cover thinness in paint where white dots presumably emerging from the ground are visible. The overpaint is opaque and not quite the right colour, but has not been excessively applied. This retouching can be found in small touches in the tapestry, around the quill, along side edges, into the floor particularly on the left, to the dresser base, the base of the table, the cloth on the dresser, the skirt, touches to the hair and the eyebrows. Also to some minor damages along top edge.There are a few scattered minor matt patches and splashes, but the varnish is fairly glossy and even and not appreciably yellowed. A light coating of surface dirt and accretions.

Now converted to striking on two bells instead of two gongs. metal mounts are slightly discoloured in parts, dial chapter rings are slightly discoloured in parts, hands are slightly stained, movement plates are slightly stained, quarter striking is not working correctly at present, going train side of the movement is working. With pendulum.
