PIAF EDITH: (1915-1963) French Singer. D.S., Edith Piaf, one page, 4to, n.p. (Washington D.C.), 16th March 1959. The partially printed document is a General Artists Corporation AGVA standard form of Artists Engagement Contract made between the Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C., and Edith Piaf for eleven consecutive days of performances by the singer commencing on 12th May 1959, with one show per day (two on Saturdays) for a payment of $9000. Signed by Piaf at the foot and countersigned by the operator and agent. Together with a second D.S., Edith Piaf, one page, folio, n.p. (Washington D.C.), 16th March 1959, the typed document being a rider to the contract, comprising twelve clauses, agreeing to Piaf receiving top billing, further referring to the orchestra and instruments meeting with Piaf's approval, a comfortable dressing room being provided, and stating 'there shall be absolutely no table service whatsoever, or any other disturbance in the restaurant over which the employer has control which would distract from or interfere with the performance…' Signed by Piaf at the foot and again countersigned by the operator and agent. The two documents are neatly stapled together at the upper left corner. A few very small, minor tears to a few edges, otherwise VG, 2 £400-600On 18th February 1859 and after a successful tour in the US, Piaf collapses on scene, at the Empire Room of the Waldorf Astoria in New York. After several surgeries she leaves hospital and would continue with the tour in May, from 12th to 23rd at the Blue Room of the Soreham Hotel in Washington. This contract is the one presented here, and would be the last of her US performances.

AVEDON RICHARD : (1923-2004) American fashion portrait Photographer. T.L.S., Rich, one page, 4to, blue paper, New York, 22nd October 1991, on his personal printed stationery, to Rosamund. Avedon states in full `My habit of never dining out unless it´s guaranteed that I won´t go to bed depressed, seems to work since I rarely accept an invitation unless it´s yours, and maybe two or three others. Both of you have never failed me, and this goes way beyond dinner. Rosamund, the book just glistens on my night table. I´m saving it for this weekend in Montauk.´ Signed in bold black ink, adding `Dear Rosamund and John - for ever - Rich´ in his hand. EX £80-100

ANNUNZIO GABRIELE D´: (1863-1938) Prince of Montenevoso. Italian Writer, Poet and WWI Soldier. Known as "The Prophet". A.L.S., Gabriele d´Annunzio, (a large and attractive signature), two pages, folio, n.p., 16th October 1926, to Giovanni Rizzo, in Italian. On a large folio letter bearing to the heading one of his printed devises "Io ho quel che ho donato" ("I have what I have given"), d´Annunzio states in part `..Your Excellency will see how my fasting doctrine, when we will be at the Vittoriale table, allows me to wait… My House is full of workers.. I have temporary a table at the Grand Library..´ Accompanied by the original 11 x 8 envelope written in D´Annunzio´s hand, adding at the base the word `Urgentissimo´ ("Very Urgent"), which he underlines repeatedly. Also bearing an attractive blue wax seal to the verso. Very small overall age wear and few pinholes to the upper edge, otherwise. VG £400-600 Giovanni Rizzo (1885-1965) Superintendent and Prefect, close to Mussolini, both as protector and overseer. Attilio Teruzzi (1882-1950) Italian Fascist Politician. Minister of Italian Africa. D´Annunzio refers to him as `His Excellency´.
