A GEORGE II CARVED MAHOGANY FOLDING TEA TABLECIRCA 1740-50Of semi-elliptical form, bearing a circular paper label titled 'THE BRITISH ANTIQUE DEALER'S ASSOCIATION ART TREASURES EXHIBITION, BATH 1958 EXH.', and inscribed as No. '12'80cm high, 103cm wide, 45cm deep (when closed) For a console table of the period featuring a remarkably similar female mask flanked by scrolls to the frieze, see Edward Lemmox-Boyd, Masterpieces of English Furniture: The Gerstenfeld Collection, Christie's Books, 1998, page 199, plate 16. The design of this table is undoubtedly influenced by the furniture designed by William Kent. The tables that were supplied to Lord Burlington at Chiswick House, (circa 1730) resonate in regard to the female masks centring the frieze. Several tables related to those at Chiswick House are illustrated in F. Lenygon, Furniture in England from 1660-1760, London, 1914, figs. 197 and 198, and it is probable that these were commissioned by Lord Berners or a member of his family. These tables are now held in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (accession number W.14 to :2-1971)  Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions, wear, old chips and splits comensurate with age and use. Good colour and patina overall. Some relatively minimal fading to the top and to the interior surface as expected with position and polishing (see additional images) Some additional old dark coloured scratches and some old ring marks to the top. Some old repairs, including adjacent to the hinges, visible when the table is opened. One rear leg may have been cleanly split away at the uppermost terminal and glued very neatly into position. There is one very neat small peg/ dowel joint there, possibly to secure. Some later associated screws added to underlying structure, several screws are lacking. (see additional images) One rear leg with a clean straight crack where part of the foot has come away and been re-glued into position. (see images) . Some old worm damage, this is mainly confined to the rear stretchers of the table and the plain stretchers supporting the rear legs There is a straight line/ scratch around the reverse side of each foot, this does not appear to indicate a spliced repair. Each line is very fine and may only be a surface scratch or a carvers mark. There are some other similar marks to the lower parts of the legs If the marks to the feet and legs indicate a join this seems very likely to be in the making/ construction of the table as the colour and the surface matches and the base of each foot appears original. The main central carved element of the frieze incorporating the female mask certainly appears to have been 'dropped in' to the frieze in the original construction of the table. It seems very likely that the carved element was commissioned from a reputable carver of the period and put in to the table. The joins in the frieze where the carving has been put in are not in exactly the same point on the opposing sides of the carved element (see images) Please refer to all additional images available via email for visual reference to condition.
